I am thinking of building a computer. Now.....or later?

My computer is going on five years old and I have stupidly purchased a video game that will not work on my PC. I could put 200 or so dollars into it and be able to play the game, but not any other new games out now or that will be out. I am very interested in building my own PC and I am just not sure if I should build now, or wait for DDR3 to be available, or maybe there are other reasons to wait. I am willing to wait about a year before I will be forced to get a new computer. If I build now, it will be

GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 LGA 775

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

Corsair 2GB (2 x 1GB Kit) PC-6400 DDR2 RAM

Thermaltake TR2 500w

e-Geforce 8800 GTS

Is this a good set-up? Should I change anything? Should I wait for a little bit?

Well you could build a cheap build for now like a 7600 gs a e4300 some cheap branded mobo, etc and then when DDR3 is out you can use some of the old parts (mostly everything just the mobo and the ram probably)

It isn't a bad idea to upgrade now, I don't know how long it is till DDR3 comes out, but I wouldn't be bothered waiting around...

Also, if you get the 965P, You are able to upgrade to a quad core CPU in the future if you ever needed to. You can have more RAM then you'll ever need and with the PCI-e slot, have any new GPU cards that come out in the future :)

I have heard DDR3 release 2007Q2 or Q3. But it is unlikely to become dominant till 2009.

Also, I suggest to get a motherboard with intel P35 chipset than 965P. However, not sure when it will be sold in UK/US. But I am sure they are already on the market in Asia

Also, I have heard some comment about the latest E6600 is not quite good for ocing. You may also consider E6320/6420 at this moment.

Or you could also wait until 2007Q3 for the e6X50 CPU

theres not much point in waiting for better stuff to come out to build a pc.
because by the time you wait for this better stuff to come out, something even better will be coming out a few months later. no matter what you wait for, no matter how long you wait, something better then whats on the market will always come out withen a few months to a year, and cause the older stuff to go down in price. its a sad to know that no matter when you build a pc and no matter what you put in it, the stuff that you put in it will be cheaper a few months later and that there will be newer stuff out. not much can be done about it though. if you always wait for the better stuff you'll never have a pc.

on a side note, you can get...
a core 2 duo for less then $200
a core 2 duo motherboard for less $100
1gb ddr2 ram for less then $50
a 512mb GeForce 7600 for less then $100

if possible, use your old case, hard drive, power supply, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and optical drives.

for less then $500, you'll have a pc that can play most games currently on the market pretty well and will be easy to upgrade in the future to allow you to play newer games.
