I am upgrading: should I get vista?

So I am planning on upgrading my computer around march, and I want to get a new (bigger) hard drive. I'll have to install a new OS, s I was thinking maybe I'll just get vista.

Questions:

1. Should I get vista? I am not sure I still have my old OS disk.
2. Would you guys suggest replacing my x1900xtx with an 8800GT or GTS (what is the diff between those two?) I have been out of the new technology loop for a while so I'm not really sure.
3. I'm going to do more research on what type of mobo to get, and what type of processor to get, but do you guys have any suggestions?
4. What new CPU's are coming out in march? Should I buy them or just use the fact that all other cpu prices will (?) drop.
5. What kind of hard drives are best to look at. Are solid state hard drives good? I found them intriguing but I don't really know abut them.

If any of you guys could link me to any good articles discussing where the market is at right now I would appreciate it. Just need a bit of help in my research. Thanks

Don't get Vista. Or not right now anyways, so many programs are still not quite compatable with it. You have to put so much effort in to make it do what you want.

1. If you want to play DX10 game now. then yes.
2. 8800GTS 512MB is faster than 8800GT 512MB. How much details would you like to know? Detail Spec?
3. MB, suggest to go for P35/ X38 chipset. CPU, may be E8400 (Out within this month)
4. intel E8XXX CPU out within Jan, Q9XXX within Q1 08. Haven't heard from intel if any price drop.
5. usually we look at 7200rpm SATA 3.0GB with 16MB/32MB Cache. My prefered brand is Seagate. some ppl with opt for more expensive WD Raptor.
SSD is good, but do you have that much money to spend?

Thanks a lot for that info. I've had a hard time understanding atnd following all the different EXXXX CPU's that intel has. I am not really interested in looking at quad cores, I'd rather stick with the dual core, so I'll read up on the 8000 series.

I'm confused about GTS vs GT. I have been looking at some benchmarks and the GT seems to outperform the GTS. The GT seems to be getting really good reviews all over the net, and it seems like the best performance for price out there right now. One last question.. will there be any mind blowing next gen GPU's coming out within the next couple months? Or is he 8800GT a safe investment for a while. I remember hearing about the 9800 or something, but I'm guessing itl be really expensive.

Yeah wait atleast until the first service pack comes out for Vista.
You will be able to greatly increase the perfomance in your Comp with little money.

I would go for the Intel 2 Core extreme w/ Asus Mobo and that antec case is really good s keep it. Also the 8800 gt's are way better than the video card that you have plus it has DirrectX 10 so games that are coming out will compatible.

There isnt much difference in the GT vs GTS. Mainly the gts has a much better stock cooling fan, by about 10C which is a big deal for people with average cases. It get about 10% better performance than the GT, so if your not willing ot pay that little more for that performance, you wont see too much of a difference.

Home Premium = 2GB
Ultimate = 4GB (I still can't believe that Ultimate eats up 33% of my RAM at IDLE with nothing on )

I've got Vista on my new laptop and I'm quite disappointed in it... I don't think I'll downgrade, but I wouldn't recommend upgrading to it. It's very slow, there are many incompatibilities with other programs, and the Wireless configuration tool is horrible. On top of that, I hate the new layout/location of various links and such(control panel options and all)

100% agree. If you are using it for mainly everything (email, internet, gaming, ect.), skip it and downgrade to XP. If you're just gaming on it and have PLENTY of RAM, Vista is fine.

The main thing I do is gaming, and a bit of internet, so Vista is fine, although I absolutely hate it.
