hello, today i was lucky enough to recieve my 8800GTS 640MB. however when playing games, or adjusting settings, the screen goes blank. whats up?

How long was it running before it shut off?

Was the fan running?

I'm guessing it over heated, but with out more information, hard to say.

Can you tell us what the temps inside the case got up to?

Maybe you don't have a big enough power supply to run it and it starved for power.

What size power supply do you have?

Could be the drivers,

EDIT: Just saw your specs in your sig.

600 watts should be enough.

hmmmm....i would have thought it was the PSU too...
my next guess would be the drivers... if i had just got a card like that, i woulda threw it in and immediately and cranked up Halo 2 or AA

thank u. it only runs for about 5minutes until it shuts off. i also cannot tell if the fan i running because the hdds are in a certain place, so the video card is about 1" off the case of my pc. and for some strange reason i cannot read any temps. i tried installing some drivers, none worked. it said that it was not a valid x32 windows application. if someone could give me a link that would be great.

also...
i like playing test drive unlimited on my pc. its prob the game i play most. with my 7100gs, i got about 13-14fps playing at a very very low 720x480. playing with the 8800 at that same resolution, i ONLY GET 20-25fps. no idea why. why cant everything work correctly?:(

HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED, THANK YOU:)

i think it might be the psu... its starting to make very strange noises. also, i was able to see the fan, and it IS moving. also, i was able to crank the resolution up, and i get fine fps, but there IS still stuttering. very bizzare

Redownload the drivers from nvidia. I experienced a similar problem with The Guild 2. Shocking shocking performance on a 7600GT until I update the drivers from the website. Ran OK after that, too bad the game sucked.
