So... yesterday I noobed myself... I pulled out my P4 3.0Ghz dual core cpu out of its socket without releasing the cpu socket lock first, and then I accidentally bent a pin, which fell off while I was trying to straighten it... T.T... so... time for a new computer?

Oh.......your screwed! lol. Sorry, but your CPU is now KIA :D

But dont feel bad, almost same thing happened to me. I tried removing the IHS off of my old Northwood P4 and scrached the CPU and it killed it. So from now on im not gonna try that lol. Not worth it.

say if i get a new cpu... do i need to reinstall windows and format my HD? or do i just plug and play?

just plug it in and go, but you do need to get on that will fit you motherboard.
you will want to buy you a new heatsink and fan or at least clean the one you have and get some thermal paste

Windows MIGHT make you re-register, and to do that you need your key. But sometimes Windows does and sometimes it doesnt, it just all depends i guess.

I don't think you'd need to re-register windows just for a new CPU... I could be wrong though.

Have you tried the CPU again? Sometimes they still work...

I think Windows just keeps track of the number of times you have changed the hardware... I don't think it matters what hardware, because on my old PC, I had to do it several times, I believe once was just for a DVD burner.

Anyways... if you don't have the dough, just buy a new CPU, not a big deal.

EDIT:
Also, on a semi-unrelated note, not even ten minutes ago, I was removing the HSF off an old computer and wriggled it a little too much and ended up smashing one of the little chips on the top of an old Athlon. :o

Dude to my knowledge. (I could be wrong) but i dont believe a P4 is a dual core cpu... If it is someone correct me but i am pretty sure it isn't!

indeed.. about half the pins (or even more) is ground anyway ^^

iirc, there actually is a P4 dual core,.. the 830 or something like that (cant be sure now tough, would have to look it up)

Well, the Pentium D 800 and 900 series are both netburst cores, but the 800s are essentially 2 prescotts on 1 die.

I dont know....i was only missing about 3 pins off my old Pentium 133 and it didnt work. Im pretty sure 90% of the pins are used....or else they wouldnt be there.

There's a difference between 3 pins and 1 pin :P Plus the socket 5/7 used a less pins than the P4. There could be more "used" pins on the P1 than the P4...

So i tried to plug the cpu w/ 1 less pin back into the motherboard, i turned on the computer, and only the fan works while the screen turned on but shows nothing... >.<... let me guess, i fried my motherboard? another question is that, did i do damage to my motherboard's cpu slot when i pulled the cpu out w/out releasing the cpu slot's lock?

2nd hand alienware area 51 m7700 on ebay are selling around 1.3k these days... tempting heh =D
