dell dimension e510.. i plug the ethernet cable in, and... nothing. god forbid.

so.. what now? i tried the downloads at http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/ and still nothing. i did the chipset upgrade, and finally got the 'ethernet controller' yellow '!' to go away............ still nothing.

i tried a different XP pc... same results. W-T-F :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

the only reason i'm doing this is because i can't stand this win7 pc anymore.. i'd go back to xp with it, but audio drivers for xp dont exist for this model.......... it-never-ends.

how do i get this other pc online? .................sigh

thanks :good:

yes.. this one, which sucks

it's win7

the xp pc in question... in device manager the only issues are 'pci device' (audio right?), 'video controller', and 'video controller (vga compatible)'

Did the internet work on this machine before you reformatted it? Its possible that the lan port is dead and you just need to get a dedicated PCI network card and install it.

that's the one i used :(

maybe it's just time to finally buy a mac.............

If a Mac has a bad Ethernet port it still won't get online :P

But like John said, you're probably going to need a new LAN card.

oook, that pc was tossed into the firepit  :gun:

up next is a compaq presario CQ5600Y.............................................. same problem. i just bought it 6 months ago, so if it's a hardware failure i'd be surprised.

yellow !'s in device mgr: Other PCI Bridge Device, PCI Device, SM Bus Controller, Video Controller

HP/Compaq's webiste doesn't support XP apparently? so now what...................... SIIIIIIIGH

Hello slotguy,

Saw your posting and your reference to a six month old Presario CQ5600Y. The CQ56 series should have shipped with Windows 7. Did you downgrade to Windows XP? In that case there would be an issue of getting support from HP. This Forum offers expert assistance. However, let me know if I can assist in escalating your issue within HP.

yes, i downgraded to XP. i've had enough of 7.

i'll try the nvidia driver, but my main issue is the ethernet connection isn't getting me online.

Usually the ethernet driver is included with the chipset driver that I linked you to. Are there any entries listed under network adapters in device manager? Usually you want to install the chipset driver first as well.

this is a different pc now.. a compaq cq5600y

and they don't have any drivers for xp apparently

and i'm ripping my hair out in clumps.. this is ridiculous

i'm so sick and tired of being sick and tired of windows bullshit

Why did you feel the need to downgrade to XP from 7 anyway? 7 is far superior to XP.

says you

uh, i think it blows
Its a proven fact that 7 is superrior to XP. 7 is much more secure, has better driver support, and most newer programs are programmed for 7. Not saying that I wouldn't choose XP hands down. I still load it to my laptops (Quad boot 2kPro, XP, 10.04, and 7) but they dont have a driver for the LAN on 2kpro or XP, but thats fine, I can do what I need with out networking. Just because something is superrior dosent mean that you should go to it just cause its there. You dont buy a new car everytime they make a better engine, or a more advanced design, do you?

From the looks of it, it has a Nvidia 6150SE chipset. Just get the XP drivers from Nvidia. The LAN is Realtek RTL8201N, same here just get it from Realtek. You can find the drivers from the manufacturers that make them.
