Hi there.

I'm having a huge problem with my laptop. My hard drive broke down after my laptop survived a fall. I had it replaced and tried to install windows through the recovery disc that was supplied with it but all it did was fail when expanding the files. I tried again and there was a 100mb partition created and I couldn't move any further with the installation. I tried with two different XP discs but they failed and said to check for viruses and wipe hard drive. I tried installing Linux and this was the only thing that worked but Id much rather have windows. How can I get around this?

What operating system originally came on the drive? Try removing and reinserting the memory sticks.

I meant on the old drive. If there are memory issues, then windows usually won't install but linux would have no problem.

If it originally came with windows 7 then trying to install XP won't work unless you change the sata controller in the bios to SATA, IDE, compatibility instead of AHCI. But most likely you won't be able to install all the drivers that XP will need. As I said, try removing and reinserting the memory sticks and see if that helps. If not, I would say you still have some sort of damage.

After that if it works make sure you wipe the drive before you try the install again. Delete the partition/s and start from scratch.
