Okay let me first explain that I know what runs on my computer. I am constantly in Task Manager monitoring things. I was recently using LimeWire pro and anyhow got some Trojans, well I let AVG, and Adware take care of it and they did catch it and remove it. Okay so no problem. WRONG.

I now have a new process running in task manager called ctfmon.exe I removed it from task manager but it came back?

I removed it from System Configuration Utility, but it came back? (notice how it is in there (TWICE) the red one must be the virus?

I also removed it from HijackThis, but it came back?

Now there is a legit program that uses this file, see below link.
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/ctfmon.exe.html

Notice how it also says:
In other cases, ctfmon.exe is a virus, spyware, trojan or worm!

I do have office programs installed but I don’t hardly ever use them. And I have been monitoring Task Manager for 6 months and ctfmon.exe has never been there before, let alone keep coming back after I delete it.

Conclusion, I am all out on what to do here. I would great appreciate any advice to get rid of this.

Thanks Bramp...

Let me give a little more details about how it came back. It does not come back instantly, it does not come back after an hour.

I first found it last night and removed it. Well I was up late for hours. And never saw it again. Then this morning when I booted up it was there. So I removed it again. This was around 10:45AM EST. I restarted several times this morning and never saw it after rebooting. Well I went out and did some yard work. Came back and here it is.

I really don't think it is a virus. But if you would like to check, find the folder it is in and the go to on or both of these sites: http://www.virustotal.com/en/virustotalf.html
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

And it will scan the folder with almost... if not all the free and also paid versions of anti-virus programs.

Hope this helps

Hey those sites are cool I did not know there were things like that. Any ways they are coming back No Virus. The only problem I have with this is that the file comes back after I delete it with hijack and or uncheck it from start up. Is it possible that there is a second file that is hidden, how would I find it?

I never had this file in my Task Manager before, and I don't want it there now. it uses up resources and I dont use it. So lets get rid of it?

You guys are correct, in my particular case it was not a virus. I followed the Microsoft link which suggested to uninstall your office products to get rid of the ctfmon.exe, and it worked. So this was indeed a clean file. The only thing that was odd, is that I was not using any Microsoft office products, nor had I recently installed any office products, so what caused the sudden use of the stfmon.exe in task manager. That indeed is the weird question which I don’t think any of us can answer.

I rely on my computer, so as you can see I did get a bit jumpy on this one. I got to keep my baby safe! LoL :D

Thank you guys far all your comments.

Bramp….

Bramp, I was looking at your sig and I just wanted to tell you, this is a bit off topic, but as you solved the problem, I don't think there is much harm in posting this.

In one of your previous threads, you were talking about having the 845G chipset as your video, however that is the chipset name, not the integrated video name. You have the Intel Extreme Graphics chip on your motherboard.

Just wanted to let you know :)
