I didn't know where else to put this this but, what determines your pc's speed?

i was wondering what determines how fast your computer is, i think it's something like megahertz? anyways, i think my computer i slow because when i turn on my computer it takes about 5min. for it to fully load, and my friends computer takes like about only a minute. my megahertz is 2199mhz, is that fast or slow? and is there a way to make my computer faster without having to buy a completely new one?

um..well there isnt just one way to measure your computer speed.
try looking for kind of processor and model and how much memory(ram) you have. that should tell us more
 
Well, you have a lot to learn about PCs. There are many components in a computer, and the speed of each one influences the speed of the computer. Also the amount of programs can make your computer take a long time to boot. Have a look here to find some things out. Also, HowStuffWorks is great place to learn things.

I would normally just explain it to you, but I don't really know how because your question is very general. Read the links, and ask some more questions, asking is the best way to learn. :) And have fun in the magical mythical world of computers :cool:

the speed of your computer is determined by many more things, including the cpu, harddrive, ram, videocard. Your computer may take a long time to fully load because you have alot of startup items. Go to start>run>(type in) msconfig>startup> and uncheck all of them items you don't need. your 2199mhz is a 2.2ghz cpu. Nowadays, you can't completely judge a cpu on its clock speed. AMD processors have lower clockspeeds but longer pipelines (something like that), read cpu101 for more info.

well, just like everything else, its easy once you pick it up. a few months ago i had never seen the inside of a computer. maybe you could get a picture of the inside of a computer and open your case and see what everthing is. just start with the basic components of what it takes for a computer to run and build from there.

MHz of what? What with the RAM? And what about the hdd cache? This is what I was trying to say, you cannot just say that speed depends on x. It depends on everything.

but don't touch anything until you really know what you are doing.;) A good way to start is by taking apare old broken computers....i have those out to wazoo....:) blahxyzblah, if you live near to me, I could just give you some, I would be more than happy to clean out my room.....:D
 
When someone asks how fast is your computer, they usually mean the processor speed alone. If you want to know,try right clicking the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, select properties, a new window should pop up and it should tell you what processor you've got. That is if your computer is up to date. It'll say mhz or ghz. Example: 1.86Ghz = 1860Mhz. If it's an older system like 800Mhz, it'll display only "800Mhz".
 
Oh, well i run into this with many customers. They tend not to know what's on their system. So what I normally do is, since most likely he didnt build his own system. Just give us the model number (on the back of the system) and we'll just look it up. With the specs provided, any one of us on this forum can answer his question.

Side note: Hey Bobo, you a Star Wars fan? I just went to the FIDM to see the costumes and equipment used for the star wars movies. Pretty interesting, especially with a life sized X-Wing fighter. To bad, they didnt have a M.Falcon. I would've wet myself. :eek:

Definitely, but wtf does that have to do with anything? Do I use the force to speed up my computer? :P BTW, What is FIDM?
 
you guys, amd and intel are different. By measuring the "mhz" of his processory, he could have a 3.4 ghz intel cpu, and at the same time, amd has processors out like mine that say 2.0 ghz that run faster then that intel. so all im trying to say is that depending on how many ghz your cpu is, you could have a fiarly nice processor or a fairly crappy one...

Your right, you cant just go by the speed. Otherwise there would be no difference between a Celeron and a Pentium. It also depends on the cache sizes and many other factors.
