i forgot my password

so im trying to get onto my comp that i havent used forever, i forget the password to it, i tried resetting the pass but i cant without some i dont want to recover the comp cause i need an important file off of it. what can i do to get onto the computer without burning a disc or buying a program. my friend said there was a way to get onto my comp without any discs or stupid nonscence, he claims i just have to hit a few keys to bypass the password. this comp runs windows xp btw. please help
 
afaik there isnt a bypass the login on windows xp.... windows 98 sure... but not xp

i dont get what the other one means by using safe mode and logging in as administrator... if he knew the administrator password he could just log in that way through normal mode. the password for the admin account sticks even in safe mode...

the best way i know is a disk you boot to and change it through that... but you dont want to do that.

It's been my experience that by default, logging in as Administrator is disabled except in Safe Mode. That's the easiest thing to try - log in as Administrator in Safe Mode. If that won't work, there are any number of Live CDs that will grab or reset the password for you, but I won't discuss it further since I'm pretty sure it's against forum rules. Google is extremely helpful, as is Yahoo! Answers. ;)
 
since when is the administrator account disabled in xp by default? if you have "welcome" screen login with the icons if you press ctrl alt del twice you can type in administrator and the password you assigned for it..... and i pray you made a password for your admin account and didnt just leave it blank you should be able to get in... safe mode doesnt enable disabled accounts on your computer.... it simply loads the bare minimum it takes to run windows for troubleshooting purposes.
 
actually i think i misread your post at first and you said logging in as administrator is disabled by default and not the administrator is disabled by default... my mistake... but i think i answered the question none-the-less

Yeah, but odds are perfect that the OP is either: trying to get into a stolen system OR trying to get into someone else's system. Either way, eh. The reasoning is always the same; another day, another 3 people asking about it.
 
I might be wrong, but I know that at least on my XP box, if you try to log in as Administrator via ctrl+alt+delete twice in normal mode, you'll get a "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction" error - Maybe I set it up that way - it's been a long time.

I seem to remember always having to go into Safe Mode to log on as administrator when I was a tech at the university I used to work at, and remember thinking how absurd it was... but again, maybe they just had it set up like that...

either way, just like imsati said, the OP is probably trying to do something illegal anyway, and he clearly needs to work on is "Googling" skills if he has to come to a forum to ask a question about something for which there is *massive* amounts of information on the "intrawebs"
 
They might have set it up that way... If I had a nickle for everytime I had to install XP I would have a large bucket full of nickles... maybe 2. Unless its a home edition thing... which i think ive only installed that like twice.... but i dont think it makes a difference.

You might have been trying to log on the computer at the university through a domain admin account... and when you rebooted to safe you tried logging in with the local admin account... ahh either way i dont think we gave this guy any super secrets on how to get into a computer so I dont think we are breaking forum rules.
