I have a HP tx1217cl laptop and when it does boot up it runs great. The problem is if I restart or turn it off and then try to turn it back on I hear the fan running and the hard drive making noise but all i get is a black screen (no error message). It doesn't matter if I've had it running all day or if its been off all day it takes many tries before it will boot up. I have re-flashed the BIOS, updated all the drivers, ran the memory module test and the HDD test from the BIOS and they all passed. It came with windows Vista on it and I was told to upgrade to windows 7 and it would correct the problem....still doing it after the upgrade. The monitor works great when it does boot up and hasn't been hanging up when the screen save is on, so I am at a loss as to what it might be, I have a 6 lb hammer on stand by....lol

its starting sound like you need to change the battery. few dollars. any store. how old is it?

not sure of the exact age of the laptop, it came with windows vista on it. Sense this is the 1st laptop I have really worked on, how or why would the battery cause this problem, it does this with the battery installed or with it out?

He meant the cmos battery but I doubt that is the issue. Resetting the cmos may help or you can try resetting bios defaults. The only other thing thats possible is that you have a loose connection somewhere.

You can try doing a checkdisk or disk diagnostic on it and see what errors it reports, if any.
