I got questions about a Website server

I am wanting to host a website to aid support for my built PC's that I will probably be selling on Craigslist. Can anyone help? I first want to set up the web server, I have Verizon and Port 80 is blocked:rolleyes: Can I use an alternative? Secondly, I will need to make the Website with Frontpage '03. I will need to make some custom buttons & links, logos, etc. Thirdly, I am going to post up the builds on Craigslist. This may take some time, I hope the mods don't mind me dragging the timeline for this thread out until maybe early Winter. I am looking for some early advice right now. I plan on using Fireworks, Photoshop Elem5, Frontpage 03, Red Hat, and this Acer Power AP2000 C2D-E4300 as the server. I am going to need a good amount of help, I hope you can give me some advice and support.

My Mom persuaded me into doing this on top of the little bit of consulting I do, is there an option on Craigslist to ship after the buyer's payment?

just a question, but are you familiar with linux? you dont need to run linux to host a webpage, and it will just add to your confusion. if you want to learn linux then it might be a good idea. also, frontpage is a good application, but there is nothing like sitting down and hard-coding your own webpage with a text editor using HTML or PHP. i guess what i am getting at, is this a learning experience or is this to make money?

Both, I am thinking about a way to do custom builds for ppl. Like they just call it in, I put a building labor charge on it and send it out. I want to use Craigslist to sell things like small builds and I will sale the larger stuff on Ebay.
 
its a good idea and should be a good learning experience, but keep in mind there are already companies that do that and its going to be hard to compete with them bc they buy in bulk which means they can get parts for cheaper. also, are you prepared to offer support and a warranty to people?

back to the webhosting aspects, just ask questions as you go. but you really do not need to use a linux server to host a webpage.

Maybe a 3-month or 6-month warranty for buyers, I plan on implementing a type of tag to keep them from opening it and messing with the parts, that way I know when it is my screw up.

If your selling against other people 3 or 6 months is not going to kick it. I give 1 year parts, labor and support to all my builds plus more on parts that have a longer warranty. But parts with a longer than a year warranty I only warrant the part not labor.

I don't give any warranty at all, I just charge by the hour. Picking up a laptop tomorrow for data recovery should easily earn me around $200
 
I,m good friends with a guy that owns a small computer shop and I order some things through him, I build all of his new builds. Plus I order from newegg, tiger,mwave and zipzoomfly in bulk or just single parts sometimes, just depends on what I need.
 
Sometimes you can find single items there cheaper at Zipzoomfly, but they give you a harder time returning items compaired to the rest, so make sure you order the right thing from them. And Tiger with all those rebaits to be cheaper, man I hate waiting on rebaits
 
The business is definitely going to be tested.... I might start by experimenting, selling certain styles and types of cell phones cases/covers and Ipod accessories. Maybe I can build up money from that slowly and start going into the computer components.
