I recently purchased windows 7 64 bit PROF for a very good price online, I thought this was the retail copy that you can just pop in and upgrade your current setup with. But it wasn't, it was an OEM Dell copy and it won't let me use this re-installation disc at all, probably because of just that reason.. its a re installation disc...

So my question to you is, 1 since I have the activation key, can I just download it from the internet and use the activation key to make it work?

number 2 is since this is a re-installation disc and it says DELL on it.. will I be able to use this in the future if my system gets corrupted and fix it with this disc?

I went to microsoft and talked to a live person, they just gave me this link http://tinyurl.com/win7hpx86iso and said if i put in my code there it would work. Is that link safe? I'm just very confused, as long as I get my full copy of windows 7 and i can fix corrupt files using this disc in the future to fresh install then i dont care.

86 is the 32-bit...

Thanks to ivtec

I just wanted to add because I understand this isn't exactly retail..

Will I have problems in the future with corrupt files etc? What if I need to fresh install, but since I'll have windows 7 from this online download, would the disc then do a fresh reinstall? Somehow keeping my OS active?

I'm pretty sure even though I'm looking to the internet for the install, since the activation code came with this re-installation disc, it should still clean install for me later on, as long as I already had windows 7 on my computer, which is what i'm doing right now from the digital download..

Does anyone know so I can download this thing?

The dell key may have been blocked from being activated. All you can do is download the iso, create the install cd, install windows and see if you can activate it.

I don't think so, when you install the Win 7 ISO, than you use the key to activate it,then you will get all the updates needed to run the machine,
you keep the Win7 ISO for in case you have to reinstall it again, you can install it and use the key as many times you want, as long it's on that one machine only, that's my understanding of the matter, someone here with more acknowledge can give more info.

Just letting you know for the future, I think the codes are both for 32 and 64 bit, meaning you can install any version using any windows 7 code.

You can get every update without activating windows.

WoWplayerHord: could you please post the place and the Window 7 Cd that you bought so we all know what to avoid in the future and what type of package they advertise, would be good to know,so somebody that needs to buy one won't get scammed.

How does the activation code work? I understand that Microsoft allows you to re-linstall a particulair OS as many times as you want in a particulair computer as long as you have purchased the original copy. That is how a repair shop legally can re-install an OS in a brand name computer when they have to replace a fried HD; you paid for the original OS system when you bought the computer. My question is, how do you replace it when you have to replace it as a hobbyist? What do you buy to replace the OS when you have the activation code label available? (Like on an used computer) I saw on eBay that there is an CD available that has all the versions of Windows7 available for re-installation, is this a CD I could use for that purpose?

If you have an existing key then all you need is to use a windows ISO file for what you want to install.

Windows 7 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
Windows 8 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8
Windows 10 - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

Thanks, that helps for 7 and 8. But how can you find the activation key for 10 when you took advantage of the offer to upgrade to 10? Did the original key not change and is still valid for the upgrade?

Activation key on the free upgrade offer to 10 is stored on the Microsoft side. Depending on your previous OS before the upgrade (retail or OEM), you may be able to transfer it to a different computer.

If you are just reinstalling Windows 10 without any hardware changes, just proceed as normal with the installation except you won't have to type in the cd key as Microsoft will check for activation when it's connected to the internet.

Have you replaced anything significant? The only thing I know that will trigger Windows not activating is if you have changed motherboards. Even a same model motherboard should activate normally.
