it's kind of stupid, but is it bad for your computer if you turn it on and off a lot? i bought a laptop and i turn it off whenever i'm done with it as opposed to leaving it on all day. but, i'm on summer vacation right now and i get bored a lot and end up turning the computer on and off like ten times a day. so, i just want to make sure i'm not doing anything wrong. i don't even know if leaving your computer on all day is even bad for it. i just always assumed it was. also, could someone please explain what the stand by and hibernate modes are for. thanks in advance.

no , i dont think you could hurt it, someone made another thread like this, but it think it was 4 a desktop.

i'd say leave it on, 4 a couple hrs., then shutdown, and fire it bck up when you want 2 use it the 2nd time around.

If I were you I would put it on stand by mode when your not using it and turn it off at night or when you go to bed. Stand by mode is a low power state which turns off the monitor and hard drive. Also hibernate mode saves whatevers on your desktop and puts it on your hard drive and shuts down the computer completely. So when you turn back on your computer, it's the exact same as when you turned it off (put it in hibernate mode).

I know for a desk top "they say" it is better to keep it on because it prevents chip creep. Which is the heating and cooling of the chips causing them to creep out of their sockets. As far as a laptop I turn mine on in the morning and leave it on almost all day. On the days that I don't have to work. On work days I turn it on to check my mail and read some posts. It is on and off quite abit on those days. As of yet I have not had any problems with my laptop. Either on all day or on and off all day.

It's fine to turn them on and off- just make sure you go through the proper shutdown sequence and not just holding the power button down. Also, there is less wear with you turning them off. I recommend turning them off when not in use.
