I have a server, now what?

I recently inherited three servers from a friend. They are four years old, have 2.8 GHz processors, and 1 GB of memory, with no hard drives included. I was thinking of using one as a web server.

Anyone have any ideas what else I could do with them? Conventional/unconventional ideas?

First get hard drives?

It all depends on what you want to do. I personally like installing XEN or EXS then it's like having two servers...

You could install a media share, or a VPN server to access your computers remotely, or use it as an IDS if your into security and want to learn more.

If you really can't think of anything to do with it you can always donate it to a charitable organization. They are always in need of IT stuff.

Yeah, Xen and ESX are for virtualization. Like if you wanted to run VOIP and a VPN or Website. You could put them each on their own virtual servers so that if one crashes they don't all go down, and stand alone they don't demand enough power and will waist resources.

You could just use the server as a normal desktop but they can be loud.

to be honest, i'd sell them. Slurp to much energy and make waaay to much noise probably.

For the money you'd get out of it you can put together a quiet, energy efficicient server with much more power. Then i'd slap on a server os and use it for lots of stuff. for example: file server (backup), mail server, webserver, ftp or vpn. Or all of the above :)
Lots of options to choose from, no specific requirements?
