I have no clue how to hook computer up to TV

I recently got an LG 42 in ch LED tv and I want to play videos on it. I am so lost as to how I can do this. On my computer I have dual geforce video cards with DVI output.... I do not have DVI on the TV... I only have HDMI and was told VGA too. I know I can get a DVI to HDMI cord... But what about the audio?

My issue is that I have the computer in another room... So Im gonna need 40 foot cords. Also I heard that the TV might think the HDMI cable from the computer is video AND sound when it's only going to be video through the HDMI.

So how do I do the sound?

I have a homade computer with Dual geforce 9800 GTX

I could use something like this but have NO CLUE what they are called or where to get them!!!! It is a portable media player that allows you to hook up an external hard drive to the TV... You should not have to spend a lot of money although hdmi cables are expensive. While conventional wisdom may be dvi to hdmi cable, it may be preferable in the long run to get an hdmi to hdmi cable with a dvi to hdmi adapter. At some time in the future you can re-use the hdmi to hdmi for other media purposes. A cable of your length will be $100+.

You could go the route of a separate player. I think these days you can go wireless from the PC too. I leave those for others to comment.

Dvi does not carry audio so you will need to have an audio cable with ends to match your PC and TV. Could be 3.5mm stereo mini-jack to RCA phono or mini-jack to mini-jack. You have to ensure the output on the PC (the green thingy) is enabled and the correct video and audio inputs on the TV are selected. If you have a speaker set connected to the PC you may want to put a splitter at the PC to go to the TV audio cable and speakers. That would typically be a male mini-jack to 2 female mini-jacks.

That may depend on the TV but you should be able to select video and audio separately. Look in the manual - when all else fails, read the instructions.
 
OK! so I got all the cords I need and I am I hooking the TV up tomorrow. I am very exicted! I got a couple more quick questions... I should hook up the TV to my second video card right? I dont think it will fit next to the monitor plug on my first video card anyway. But my main question is, how do I get my computer to recognize the tv? I have geforce 9800 GTX card and windows 7, 64-bit. Do I need to contact Nvidia to find out how to set it up the best way or is it pretty simple?

Again I appreciate all the help! This has been a year in the making and I hope everything works as planned.

Ps- Will VLC player be ok or do I need another program to watch files and 1080p videos?
 
You should be able to go into the nVidia control panel and have it detect the TV and switch it as either a primary or secondary monitor.

As far as video player goes, VLC should work fine. I personally prefer Media Player Classic (comes with the K-Lite codec pack).
 
should I hook it up to my second ge-force card? Also with the sound, I think I am just gonna hook my computer speakers in the TV room, and run a LONG cord to put my computer. Only problem with that is I wont be able to hear regular TV through those speakers. Lastly, what is the best sound card I can get for around 50 bucks? I saw a nice creative labs one with PCI express, which would be perfect... but it's 100 bucks. Do I need to spend this much?

I noticed after I installed Windows 7, My speakers dont sound right... More sound is coming out of the right side than the left. It might be a driver that needs to be unpdated but how do I find out? It could be the speakers or internal sound card... but I only noticed it after I installed windows 7.
