I have no earthly idea why my computer is raping me

Ok so I live at home and went out of town for two days...i get a call from my bro saying there was a power surge or whatever and that when he turns on my computer there is a really loud noise like something grinding against something else

Also my moinitor wasnt coming on and I had to turn the power supply button off to turn the computer off once i started and couldnt just press and hold the front button

I do have a surge protector but i donno why a power surge would cause that

so i get home pop the thing open and the cpu/processor fan has a wing that is broken off...that explains the noise...so i unplugged the fan and turned the pc on...

still no monitor...plugged it into my video card and back of the pc like reg still nothing

So my bro says it might be the processor?

I dont think my monitor is fried because i plugged my laptop into it and i could see the laptop screen on my monitor...

i was tryingt o make it so i can plug my desktop to my laptop and use my laptop monitor as the desktop monitor to see my pc...but that didnt work for some reason

Anyways...what can it be and what should I do to fix it? new processor? power supply? or just new fan?

Thanks...I did move recently so the comp was in the trunk for 3 hours but i have been running it smoothyl for a week without any probelms whatsoever

its teh desktop in my sig btw

thanks for any help

The problem with the monitor, I'd say try swapping in a different video card. That could have fried.
However, the fan randomly snapping a blade is weird...

In order of greatest likelihood, I would say power supply, video card, motherboard, RAM, processor could be the cause of your problems. I know that really narrows it down </sarcasm>, but the only thing you can do is start testing parts. If you have another similar desktop, you can just try everything one at a time.

Sounds like your bro knocked the pc over or stuck something inside...the fan just would not break off like that i feel because of a "power surge" bet your family or someone u know is holding out on u and they actually broke it.

the fan on the processor wouldn't just break.

I would put money on it that someone has gone inside your system to try and have a mooch and tried to look at the CPU (ringing any bells about who said something about the CPU ;)). They didn't know how to remove the fan properly or it was a little stiff so they just pulled as hard as they could, that is why the fan blade came off. They managed to mess up the processor too and that would be why SOMEONE said it could be the proccessor.

Just what I am thinking though ;)

do you get any bios beeps?

yeah my bro has an almost exact same pc...but to be honest i did move and pc was in trunk for 3 hours but its been running solid for the past two weeks after i moved so

yeah ill do this tonight...try to switch parts in and out of mine and my bros computer

btw what is the bios beep and what does it signify? and when would i hear it? at the beginning right from the pc itself? not the speaker?

i dont think i remember hearing it but ill check again

i will post whatever comes out of this and hopefully at the worst il have to order another psu or something

cant lose my hdd with my tv shows, movies, music, and of couse porno lol

The "bios beep" is a sort of code that the motherboard uses to tell you what's wrong. The sequence of beeps can tell you if it's a RAM problem, processor problem, etc. Of course you do have to have a speaker attached to your motherboard for it to work, and I think that a lot of mobos only have a couple of codes... one to tell you it posted fine and another to tell you it didn't.

lol, the bios beeps are the beeps that the motherboard makes if the bios can't post properly because of a hardware problem, for example RAM has a problem, proceessor, HDD etc, or if there is no keyboard plugged in. If it makes the beep code for say the RAM, you will know it is a RAM problem.

as for the HDD problem, that should be safe, if your computer has gone tits up then you can atleast either use the hard drive in a new rig or fixed rig or back it all up to another :p

one question i had...doesnt the fact that it "turns on"...like i can hear it turn on,...the machine revs up...and the light in front comes on

doesnt that negate the fact that it can be a psu problem? and point to processor?

or can psu still be screwed and the parts rev up but the comp doesnt "turn on"

sorry sounds all confusing donno how to explain it

Actually, from what you've described, I would say that it's probably the video card. When it turns on, do you see the hard drive light blink? It seems like it might be working fine, just not outputting video.

If your bro has the same computer, take his and swap hard drives... tell him there was a power surge. If he gets wise just kill him.

Hence my first post.
Have you tried a different video card? And yes, if everything boots up and still no video,
it more than likely is your video card. However, if you swapped in a different one with
the same results, it will point to a different hardware problem.

The first part where you were gone for 2 days, I've been doing this for 14 years and never had a fan blade just break, not blaming your brother but somebody has fooled with it.

If it was started for a period of time with a broken scrubing blade and not cooling right, it could have overheated your processor. Most bios do not have CPU overheat shut down enabled by default.

You said you unplugged the CPU Fan. Alot of boards (will not boot) with the CPU fan unpluged ( guess why).

im going to have to go with the general consensus of posts. just because you have a surge protector doesnt mean your protected from surges. its a just an extra precaution and it doesnt always work. i backup battery is even one step further in the direction of safety. Its very possible that you have fried your video card. take he RAM out and see if you get BIOS beeps and that might tell you if the board is opperating.

Ok so Im pretty sure its the processor now we tried out different parts and stuff

So...how would I go about getting a new processor? mine is Socket 939...and i cant seem to find any on newegg

Could I get a dual core socket 939 as long as its socket 939 or do some mobos support dual core and others dont regardless of socket

what would be the "next best" site or store to get a socket 939 for since newegg doesnt carry them anymore...ive always just found and bought everything off of newegg

Thanks...ill probably upgrade my ram too....need a new monitor but ill just have to hold off on that now lol

also what price should i expect to pay for it....under a 100 or over for the processor?

So i decided Im probably going with a AMD 3800+....I just can't decide if i should go with the Athlon 64 or Athlon X2

Athlon 64 is 2.4 ghz single core around $40 on ebay
X2 is 2.0 ghz dual core around $120

And then I found an Athlon 64 X2 4400 for $99 on ebay

All good rated sellers etc...

Im thinking the Athlon 3800+ single core would be the best "Value" or bang for buck and closest to what I have...i was pretty happy with my computer's performance for something that i got 4 years ago...never had a complaint about speed etc...

Also what about the fan? i can just get any 80mm fan? or are there compatibility issues there too?

Thanks guys you all rock

so i just need confirmation...if my pc is socket 939 and athlon 3800+ says socket 939 its a definite fit right?

and i can get any 80mm cheap $10 fan right?

thats all i need to verify?

thanks
