How much would I have to spend on building a gaming computer that'll play the latest games really well? Would I have to spend thousands? I was considering building this, but I'm concerned it won't play the games I wanted to play well, like Crysis and SC2.

You may need to purchase Windows, unless you already have a spare license you can use. As far as gaming, I'd suggest you google some benchmarks on that particular video card. The quad is good now that many games support multithreading. You could always overclock it a bit if you get a better heatsink/fan.

My max budget is around 600$, and I think there's a Windows 7 OS lying around here somewhere... Oh, and how much can I buy a good monitor for? It can't be too expensive; and I'm willing to extend my budget a little.
 
Sounds like a solid budget build however some things i want to chime in on.

My current system plays SC2 with Ultra settings at 1440 x 900 resolution perfectly. Though with AA on the frames drop during intense battles with lots of units on-screen. I'd recommend at least a HD5770 for ultra settings in SC2. For the CPU i would recommend a quad core just because of better multi-tasking capability.

Not that the Phenom II X2 555 is a slouch for gaming (especially when OC'ed). However there is always a possibility of unlocking the cores on the 555 through the motherboard you have chosen.
 
My current monitor has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels... Would I be retarded if I just stuck with my current monitor? (It isn't that bad, it's a flat screen and the box said HD lol)
 
I think for that budget the build list you have above is probably going to be the best,if i try anything else its way overbudget.

May i suggest you save some more and get at least a 5830 or GTX 460 (1GB)...if you want to be playing demanding games such as Crysis.

Well, I took it as a total noob wanna-be IT pro scenario. Though bells faintly rung when you had the stupidity to take out yer fan, come on, unless you've got serious issues, if you know how to take the darn thing apart, you ought to know that the fan is very important.

And 5 minutes isn't long enough for that to happen. You'd get a bluescreen probably, and you're monitor definitely would not explode. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to read and post here xD.
