I need assistance with dual monitors...

Hello Everyone,

I'll try to explain my set-up a bit to aid you in helping me. I have a Lenovo M75e desktop computer (model #: 5041A6U) with AMD 760G graphics. The back of my tower has single VGA and single DVI-D (Dual-link) outputs.

As the title of this post suggests, I am trying to implement a dual monitor set-up. I've done some research and have been thrown from one tech support operator to another with little to no help being received. I need to know what I need to do, which video card to purchase, etc in order to run two VGA monitors.

I know the DVI-D cannot simply be converted to VGA via a cable, due to the fact that one is digital and one is analog. I also know that last statement is half true, as supposedly a powered digital to analog converter could fix my problem.

So, if anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. I was able to get two matching monitors (seemingly a feat in my company) and don't want to split the twins up :D .

Thanks ahead of time!

Yeah I don't know all too much about this either but you've pretty much answered your own question. Either go for the converter (I think you have to go for an active one) or look for a GPU that fits your MB with two DVI. Sorry for not being more helpful, I'm sure someone else with more experience will poke their head in at some point.

newcomputer20: Thanks! I think I would want two VGA though, rather than two DVI, as my monitors are VGA. I would have the same problem again if I went with two DIV...

voyagerfan99: I don't see how that adapter would work. The description states "Converts LCD/ DVI port into VGA port, works with most video cards (will not work with DVI-D and DVIS ports)." I have the DVI-D port which it says it wont work with.

So, with that being said, how do I go about picking a video card?

voyagerfan99: I appreciate your help greatly, so don't take my questioning of your advice as an insult. I'm just simply trying to figure this all out.

So, the correct adapter that you linked me to, how do I know that my graphics card can convert the digital signal to analog for me?

I have seen before that an active converter is necessary in order to go from the digital to analog signals. Is there anyway to find out without buying an adapter and trying it?

I work on computers every day of my life. Some only have DVI, and I use VGA monitors at work. I use an adapter like the one I linked and the video works fine. You need nothing extra.

Voyagerfan99: I bought the correct adapter and hooked everything up. I shutdown my computer and unplugged everything. I then plugged it all back in and powered everything on.

I went into the display settings and the second monitor doesn't seem to be recognized by the system. I clicked on 'detect' and nothing was found.

I went into the Device Manager and scanned for hardware changes. Nothing there either. I attempted to update the driver on my monitor as well as video card and both were up to date.

I'm not sure what else to try. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

It's quite possible that you can't utilize both onboard connections at once. You'll probably need to buy a card.

Now that I ruled out the converter which I figured wouldn't work, I guess I will need something extra...

Back to my original inquiry then I suppose... How do I go about selecting a videocard that will work? The 'work' portion of that question is most vital!

Thanks

What uses will this be for? Just basic internet surfing and documents, etc?

Yes, mostly just basic stuff, nothing involving games or anything.

I use ArcMap a decent amount for GIS work, but I don't think that requires anything special....
