I need help building an HTPC for under 500$

Hello, I want to build an HTPC on a 500$ budget. I thought it would be a fun project. I already have the mouse, keyboard, and monitor so I just need to build the computer its self.

I am somewhat new to this so I was wondering what commponents I need and which ones are a great deal for my budget. Keep in mind, I'm planning on everything being no more than 500$. I don't want to spend too much.

Here are the components I know I need (am I missing anything)?

-Case
-Optical Drive
-Video Card
-CPU/Fan
-Hard Drive
-Mother Board
-RAM
-Power Supply

Any advice? What things do I need to make sure match up? Which characteristics of each component shows how good it is? Does anyone have any designs under $500 that they could share with me?
Any help at all would be great really. Thanks!
 
do you have any form of os, windows is 100 but easily put into that budget, along with the possibility of ubuntu, but that isn't something to just jump into with no knowledge, you can research or even run it if you want now by putting it on a usb drive and booting to it. and i'm making a list right now, i plan to use a itx case if you'd like otherwise let me know, but itx or whatever it is is the smallest case/mobo form factor out there right now.

but this is what i had put together, the cpu although slow should still be plenty powerful enough for movies and intenet and that stuff, and also there's 2 hdd's one's faster but the other for 10 more has 2x the memory, but 1tb is plenty, and it's also one of the fastest ones at that price range too.
