OK i don't have a network yet but once i get my new computer i will be getting charter high speed 3Mbps

I need help figuring out what I need to order??? I will have my computer and my family computer on a network, so what do I need to make this work, modem, router, ect.

should I get it professional installed or save the $50??? and do a self-install??? how hard is it to self install a network???

thanks

is it 50 to have charter come out and install the cable modem. that might be a wise expenditure depending on the configuration of the houses cable, in my personal experience with charter they needed to drop a cable line to the room i wanted it in...in that case its better to have them do that than have yourself drilling walls...as far as what you need to setup the network connecting the two computers you have options...wireless or wired...if wireless you will need a wireless router and a computer that can connect to wireless...if wired you need a router and a couple of ethernet cables

OK thank

any other suggestions, i really don't mind doing a self install, but how hard is it and what do i have to do??? how long would it take???

this whole setup is going to be wired, i don't really want people piggybacking my signal / steal inforamtion

if you did it yourself with never setting up the whole thing, hours possibly days. Just pay them the 50. For your network, they should provide you with the Modem, then you just gotta buy a router, and a cable. Get like a walmart ethernet cable (make sure its not normal telephone) and make sure its long enough.

So have them install a modem, then go down to Walmart and pick up a router and cable right???

You could even try peer to peer network with just a crossover cable. If you have xp installed on them both it's pretty easy to setup. The only downside is that the host computer has to be switched on for the other computer to access the internet.

This took me no more than 20 minutes to setup and it was the first time I had tried it.
