hello all

i have a HP M9280A and the hard drive crashed and gave me a blue screen
i replaced the sata drive with an old ide one i had but when i install windows it freezes around 32% and wont go any further even after 4 hours
i also tried another ide drive with windows already installed but it wont recognize the windows installed on it.

should i buy a new sata drive or scrap the computer and get a new one ?

The hard drive may not have been the problem.

When you reinstalled, did you do a clean install or just clone the drive?

I would do a memtest before anything else and see if your RAM is faulty.

Sorry didn't see you were trying to install and it wasn't working.

Your windows disk or cd drive may be bad, then. Have any extras of those around?

windows cd is fine i have used it a few times and the cd drive is ok too
i was wondering if the harddrive type would cause this problem as the drive from my other computer with windows already installed will not load in this system

When you install windows, it ties that version to that computer. If you switch between motherboards, it will not load.

Look in your BIOS and see if there's an option for specifying sata or ide.

i had another go at it today and the harddrive i was putting into it just died could the computer be causing this i dont want to spend money buying a new sata drive if it will crash too

Could be a bad power supply or the PC is overheating. How dusty is it inside and what power supply have you got? The PSU may have caused the hard drive to fail.

IDE are very outdated and slow, if you google around you'll find numerous concerns about them freezing and misbehaving. I'd replace the drive with a SataII, and a fresh install of windows 7. Try different ports on motherboard, one of them may have gone bad.
