I need some help....

I recently purchased a Gateway GT5656 computer and a Gateway 22" widescreen LCD HD monitor. I don't feel I am getting true HD on the monitor. There is a VGA connection on the computer and both VGA and DVI connections on the monitor. Currently I am running a VGA to VGA cable. My question is this: Will I improve my video quality if I purchase a VGA to DVI cable or a VGA to DVI adaptor? Thanks in advance for the input.

Nope, because the source is still analog. Granted, I dont think your understanding the definition of HD, its a resolution (and in some cases bit depth). But what it seems your talking about is clarity, your picture "isnt sharp enough". Using the current analog to analog cable your monitor should have a "adjust picture for best quality" option in the settings which analyzes the analog signal for best results, which might help.

However, if you want a true clearer/better picture you will need to get a graphics card that has a DVI output. Depending if your a gamer/picture editor we can recommend you a good reliable card that will work in your machines pci-e slot.

As an example what I currently use with its DVI output, 7600gt

There are cheaper cards out there if you dont need as much power (aka, not a gamer), and more expensive cards if you intend to play games like crysis.

Granted, you will also need a DVI to DVI cable if you dont already have one.

In other words I should have purchased a computer that already had the DVI card installed? I'm not a gamer.....what card do you recommend I purchase?
 
Another question

If I purchase the video card recommended I want to make sure I get the correct cable. DVI-D male to male?
