I need to achieve open nat on my xbox. Problem is I dont know how to do it. I will explain the scenario below

I Have two netgear routers, both dg834gv4. One router is downstairs and the the otheer is upstairs. The router upstairs is connected to the router downstairs through wireless repeating. The router upstairs connects two xboxs. Now I can only achieve moderate nat on xbox's, how do i achieve open status?
So far I have opened ports that have been recommended on portforwarding.

Thanks in advance for any help I get.

I'm not sure if you were aware, but, the Xbox 360 must be compatible with the given router. Some routers have much stricter NAT settings, and thus, Xbox Live may not function correctly, i.e. you may not be able to hear your friends voices in Live chat, you may not be able to party with some of your friends, and you may be disconnected randomly from online game sessions.

I checked the list of compatible router hardware for you, and found that your router is not supported. You may check the official Xbox site for yourself in the link provided:

http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages...ng/network-hardware-compatible-xbox-live.aspx

Read all of the information on that page, as it is very helpful. A friend and I had this issue with a Netgear actually. The NAT status of the Xbox was strict, and his game sessions were terrible. IF we could join a game, it wasn't the best, and we would disconnect often. We just returned the router, and purchased a router that was compatible with Xbox 360.

First things first, NAT type is affected by port status, not router model. My router isn't listed on there and it gets moderate or restricted NAT type when I don't have it configured properly. Currently mine is open and has been for months.

Second, iffy, what ports did you forward? I noticed that portforwarding doesn't always list all the necessary ports to open.

NAT can be affected by router model, because some routers do not allow port forwarding, forcing Microsoft to create the website I previously posted, because Microsoft does not know if the routers they didn't test allow port forwarding. Port forwarding was once a luxury, and some routers produced today still don't include "true" port forwarding. Also, just because a router claims to have port forwarding, does not mean it will function correctly with the given program. The router's firewall may not allow traffic to or from the Xbox. My latest Netgear and Belkin routers don't have port forwarding, but, luckily, were both certified to work with the Xbox 360. Research, research, research.

Even if a router doesn't support port forwarding nearly all of them can be refitted with some kind of open source firmware that gives the option and works.

Still my statement before, it is about port status. I suppose I was being bold by saying saying its NEVER a router model issue, because there could be cases where the router simply doesn't support anything other than what was packaged. That list kinda pisses me off too. It only lists the latest models that are "Xbox Certified" there are plenty of routers not listed on there (older models) that work fine, just Microsoft recommends the latest and greatest. I'm sure Wireless N has a lot to do with it.

Imo, if the router supports port forwarding and it functions (even if a new firmware is needed) it should be considered safe to use for Xbox Live.

@ the OP. Does your router have a DMZ feature? I didn't see anything in the manual mentioning it.. If it is there though, most routers only allow for one IP address to be added, but it would be interesting to see if it makes changes to Open. At least then we would know either the proper ports aren't open or port forwarding isn't functioning. Oh and check to see if NAT Filtering is turned on, I believe that should be turned off for this to work.
