I need (want) a new computer

Hi guys,

I'm in need of some help from experts, so I came here! :)

My current computer (P4 3.2Ghz, 1GB RAM...) has served me well for the past 5 years, but is obviously outdated now, and I'm looking to replace it. I just don't know what's good and what's not.

My budget is £500 (obviously I'm based in the UK). I don't need a monitor, keyboard or mouse. I'd like Vista  . I'd like my new PC to be as quiet a possible. I'll be using it for various tasks, including using Photoshop and Cubase. I'd also like to play CoD4 on it.

I'm happy to buy it from eBay, eBuyer, Newegg, wherever. I'm happy to build it if I can, but I've never built a PC before (only inserted hard drives).

Lastly, what do you guys think of something like this?

First off I wouldn't trust anyone who makes the blatant mistake of quoting the processor speed of a Q6600 as Processor Speed: 9,600 MHz . That is meant to mislead buyers

I understand that. Pretty much all of the eBay sellers are doing that, I think. What do you think of the computer, though?

I don't normally post much in this section as everyone's idea of something good is different but wait a short while and you will soon get all the opinions you need.

My opinion is I wouldn't mind it myself ;)

The power supply looks very weak. It's not a quality unit to begin with and only has 26 amps on the 2 combined 12v rails.

It's a piece of crap. Any eBay computer will have:

1) A rediculous price
2) A very weak PSU
3) A flashy case
4) Crappy hardware

Many, many thanks for taking the time to do that. I can't see a hard drive there, though?

Thank you Daisy. Yes, I'm definitely happy to build it myself.

Some questions
  1. One thing I had forgotten is that I have a brand new, spare hard drive. It's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9, 500 GB. Would this hard drive work with either/both of the above set-ups? Daisy, I've noticed the hard drive you suggested is a Barracuda 7200.10, so I assume the 7200.9 would be fine?
  2. How loud will the above set-ups be?

Some notes
  • I think I want 4 GB of memory as I often run various memory hogging programs at once.
  • If I can make use of the Seagate Barracuda hard drive, then I don't need another.
  • It doesn't matter what the case looks like as only the front will show.
  • My budget of £500 is flexible, if it helps.

1. SATA or PATA(EIDE, IDE, ect)

2. Motherboards have "SMART" fan to automatically downclock the fan speed to save power/noise. Video cards usually use only 30% of their max fan speed during regular use. As temperatures rise, so will the speed of the fan.

Overall though, you should be fine.

4GB is fine, as long as you get DDR2-800 and a 64 bit OS (Not XP x64)

That's fine, hopefully it is SATA.

Then save your $$$ and get a case that's cheaper, but not necessarily worse.

In that case, you can go drop that 250GB HDD, go for 2 x 2GB RAM.

And if you can stretch your budget a bit, I recommend you go for E8400 OEM + Arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.

Case: ebuyer have its own brand case. They are quite cheap. I have had own one of them, not sure the rest of their quality. You need to look up reviews yourself.
However, I feel the cooler master/ antec case are easier to hide the cables

Excellent. Thank you once again Daisy. So here is where it is currently at:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3GHz £129.95

Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 iP35 £63.16

Memory: Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz £64.39

Graphics Card:
Point Of View 8800GT 512MB £119.98

Hard Drive: Already got (Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA 7200.9) £0

DVD/CD Drive:
LG GH20NS10 20X SATA DVD±RW/DL/RAM £14.77

Power Supply: OCZ StealthXStream 600W PSU £47.58

Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium £62.96

Cooling Fan:
Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P £15.24

Case:
Extra Value Shiny Piano Black Mid Tower Case £13.99

Total: £532.02

I had to change the power supply because the 500W one was sold out. I just went for the next one up (600W). What should I do?
Is the case compatible with everything else?

That case is big enough for your Motherboard, but it have no case fan.
Get one at the front and one at the back and make sure they come with screws or you already have fan screws
