I now know how to OC :D - Vcore question.

Okay so I read this guide and I now finally know how to OC my prossesor, Lol. I got the Q6600 and was thinkin about OCing it to like 2.8 - 3.0 or something and was wondering if 500 volts is enough to keep it going?


Also, just to be a 100% sure, Is this where I increase the clock rate?

EDIT: Okay that's a huge pic LOL. Where it says PCI/host. Is that correct? Should I increase it 1 point at a time or should I lower the clock ratio from x9 too something else so I dont overheat it?

500watt should be enough... You'll find out if it isn't.

Looking at that picture, I wouldn't have a clue which one it is... It's normally called 'FSB'.
 
Okay, when my comp has been on for 1 day it goes up to around ~50C How much would you say that I could OC without burning it?
 
Ah okay. Any tips on how to lower the temps a bit? Like put my comp in the freezer or something..


EDIT: Also, on about what temp does it overheat on?

the cpu will be fine up to 85C.. at that point it will burn.. but i really wouldn't let it stay over 65C under load temperatures either.

yea, getting a new cooler would be an excellent idea. the arctic cooling "freezer 7 pro" will fulfill your needs, but the "freezer XTREME" would be better, or even the thermaltake big typhoon. that's the cooler that i use.

lol i just love how the forum puts a red line under "cpu" while i'm typing it... this is a computer forum v_v

If the other one that you use is better then sure, It's cheaper lol. I belive I'll wait for the fan though before I start to OC.
 
Is the 50C under load? If so, then your fine. It not, then you need to fix things.



It was not under load. But I cleaned out my comp today and moved it to a cooler spot, and it's now on 35 - 40C when it's not under load. I did a stress test and after about 5mins it was up to around 60C and still going up slow and steady.

Id buy a new heatsink, then throw in an extra fan and a thermal compound because fans and compound like arctic silver 5 are very cheap. Do a good job at managing cables and have a good setup for airflow, and with the compound, you should see a difference.

Ill be doing that soon. Right now I only have one front intake fan(80m), a side intake fan(120mm), exhaust vent for my heatsink, a exhaust fan(120mm) on the back then the psu exhaust fan(120mm). Im gonna replace the 80mm with a 120mm then add another 120mm to the other side of my harddrive casing. That way I have airflow over my harddrives, but that gets pulled very quickly into the rest of my case.

I typed more than I thought I would of just now. :o
 
get a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme... it fits perfect in a mid ATX tower and is the BEST cooler on the market. there's plenty of evidence to support this, also 500 volts would kill just about any CPU one the planet... i assume you meant 500 watts. not all power supplies are created equal, but i'd say you're safe with an antec if that's what came with your case. if/when that burns out look into PCP&C, Seasonic or Corsair.
