I/O shield

I have this really old PC (Dell XPS T600) and I decided to give it a new case so I bought a Gigabyte GZ-X1. After I gutted the old case I realised that the I/O shield doesn't fit the aperture of the new case >:(

Now I'm gutted, but I still don't understand why this happened since the Dell XPS T600 PC case has an I/O aperture smaller than the standard for ATX/ MicroATX form factors. Is this an example of Dell being idiots, or me being an idiot? What am I missing here? It's annoying that something so seemingly minor has caused me to waste this money!

Dell are known for not being able to overclock or upgrade, it could be due to dell making their case a difference size so most motherboards cant fit it. Would you be able to get a picture of the I/O shield next to the I/O shield area on the case so we can get an idea of what youve got to work with? :)
 
I will try to upload a picture tomorrow as it means taking the computer apart again! I can tell you now though that the I/O shield is 160mm x 37mm (as accurate as I can be!) but the aperture for the new PC case is 158 x 42 (which is the standard size, so no surpirses there)
 
Dont really need one, its mostly for looks. Your board is grounded just fine to the case with just the standoffs.
 
wierd, maybe try cutting the I/O shield to fit if there is room to spare? you can't really buy a new I/O shield sicne they are made specifically for each mobo :/
 
Are you using an Intel Core i3 530 Dual-Core processor at the heart of this system Drummerguy? In another thread I noticed that you were stating this was an awful processor. The Core i3 530 has some decent processing power. It is rated in the "High End CPUs" category on CPUbenchmark.net.

Just to clear up, I posted this question a very long time ago now but I decided to check up on this just now :)

@ Turbo10 I'm sorry I didn't get back to you on the pictures, I remember I was going to but I had something a bit more pressing come up which made me forget to do this! The thing was that the I/O shield was simply a completely different shape and there is nothing I can really do in terms of bodging it really :/

@2048MB No, the computer I am referring to in this post is completely separate to the one refered to in the thread on the i3 processor! I'll re-read that post but I definitely didn't mean to say it was an awful processor, I am extremely pleased I have it, I just meant that for the socket type, there is a lot of room for potential improvement (which is the source of my anger at Dell because they suggest I ditch my comp and get a whole new one if I want to upgrade the processor :mad: )

@cabinfever1977 That is definitely an option I am considering, however I think at the moment I will upgrade what I currently have to the best the current mobo can support (complete with original case), then give it to my gran (because she has an even older one! so more than 10 years old...), which I will hope she will appreciate haha
