I plan on building this PC, but is it TOO overkill?

I planned on building a PC. Im a big time gamer and need an extreme pc. So here are the specs.

CPU - INTEL CONROE CORE 2 EXTREME QX6700 2.66GHz QUAD 8MB

RAM - 4096 MB DDR II 800 Memory (Kingston HyperX) (Asus Intel & SLI

Recommended.)

Motherboard - ASUS Striker Extreme SLI nForce 680i Mother Board

Hard Drive 1 -Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000RPM Serial ATA 16MB

Hard Drive 2 -Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000RPM Serial ATA 16MB

Gfx Card 1 - ASUS nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR 3 Video

Gfx Card 2 -ASUS nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR 3 Video

Power Supply - 850 Watt Thermaltake Tough Power Modular PS W0131RU

That is the setup i want. i want maximun FPS with no lag what so ever. i want to be able to run games on the highest settings possible with MAX FPS. games like Oblivion, Flight Sim X, and more and get it ready for Crysis. This PC will utilize around Vista Ultimate and DX10.
But, i have to ask. Is the dual GeForce 8800 GTX's really nessesary for MAX FPS? or will one do just fine?

The quad core and SLI is totally unnecessary now. I'm quite sure a single 8800GTX would be more than enough to max out any game today. If you want SLI that bad, I'd hold off a while. Get the SLI board, and once you actually notice the single card lagging, buy another.

As for Quad core, if I'm not mistaken, those processor currently run slower than some duel core ones. Wait until more things can actually utilize the cores before investing so much in them.

Im keeping the mobo no matter what becuse it supports quad cores and when it it comes time to get a quad core cpu ill have the hardware for it. Does this look like a more realistic setup?

Get the E6600 - $700 savings

You dont need 4GB, just get 2x 1GB for now. - $250 savings

eVGA 680i Motherboard - $200 Savings

2x Raptors RAID 0

8800GTX (just one, no need for SLI yet)


And the eVGA also supports quad core and CPU's with 1333Mhz FSB.
 
my setup right now can handle every game out with really nice fps, barely lag, ive lagged only once in fear... which was like zomg, 50,0000 exlposions...

its a

amd x2 4200+

2 gb samsung pc 3200 dual channel

ati x800xt ( overclocked to 600 / 1230 ) Stock was 500/1000

asus amberine m

thats it, it was only like 900 bucks and it bangs hard. :>

all i need for the future to come is maybe a new powersupply and graphics card.

Yes and no. You need an SLI-ready motherboard and video card.

Basically it lets you use two video cards in conjunction with each other, to theoretically double performance. but in reality it doesnt prove to be twice as good.
