I think my Hard Drive is failing

Boot up my laptop and it cannot find the internal hard disk drive. I stopped using it and have since tried to boot only to find messages like the following pictures.

I have had the laptop not quite four years. I never backed up my hard drive and am hoping to retrieve files. Lesson has been learned and I am prepared to arm myself with an external drive in the future but for now I am seeking advice on salvaging this laptop or hard drive.

You could remove it and add in a new hard drive(2.5" form factor) to the laptop with a fresh copy of windows. Move files from old drive to new one if possible, I would take this time to back them up before it stops working completely.
 
Yep, code 142 means you replace your drive NOW. Hopefully you can slave that drive and transfer your data over.
