I want to get a new computer and need help

I want to get a computer that will be used for gaming. My worries about getting a computer for gaming are: it will need to be constantly updated to play current games, the graphics wont look better than on a ps3, and getting a computer thats lasts for a long time will be very expensive. I will have around $850 dollar budget in a month. Building my own computer seems to be the most cost effective, but I have close to no idea what to do when it comes to choosing parts so help would be great. Also, how often does a gaming computer need to be updated to play current games and on average how much would each upgrade cost?

With $850 budget for tower, that will build you a mid-range PC. And you would probably looking for an upgrade after 3-4 years. If you purely want it to play game, PS3 would be a better as it is cheaper. But a PC could do a lot more stuff.
