I was hoping for more of an upgrade, but this was still a fun little project :)

Long story short, I got my hands on an i5-2410M. Being socket G2 as my current i3-2350M, I decided to see how my laptop would take to the new processor. Not the best set of photos showing the disassembly process, but you get the general idea.

One scary moment... I had the system rebuild and plugged in it. Everything was fine for 10 seconds or so then it began beeping and the charge light flickering  After my heart stopping, I realized I'd plugged in my netbook's charger rather than this ones... :o

So yeah, a fairly minor upgrade. I really wish the i5 had been a 2.5GHz but there's still a clear improvement.

All the laptops should made like Dell inspiron 1420. upgrade CPU only take 5 screws on the back and reapply thermal paste.
Cheers.

HAH! That's my other/previous laptop. Mine's had a T5550, T4500, T6500, and now a T8400 ;P Though my girlfriend's Lenovo is easy as well. She's going to get my old i3 (2.3GHz vs her 2.1GHz). One big panel to access the CPU, HD, RAM, and wireless card ;)

Not required. Aside from having already upgrading the BIOS to the latest some time ago, this laptop is offered with i5's. Popped it in and away I go.

Just like the inspiron 1420, I took out the t5250 and popped in the t8300. cost $40 Cpu + thermal paste. from 1.5ghz to 2.4 ghz right away. they should make all the laptop like that. upgrade anything that is there to be upgrade easy and painless.
Cheers.
