I'm planning to build an rig based around the i5 2500k over the next couple months. I have been doing some research and below is what I've been able to find as a good starting point. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions that would improve the system. I'm looking to spend under 1k.

The only thing I might consider switching would be the PSU for this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

The reason being the one I listed has 1 12V rail, while the other one has 4. You would have to be careful about what you hook to what connection that way so you don't overload something. The Corsair one does have 100W less, but should be still more than enough to power what you have, is the same price and you don't have to worry about overloading the rails with too many high power things on the same rail... The other PSU is fine, too, but just a suggestion. Otherwise, that should set you up for the next 3 or 4 years without needing to do much of anything to it at all! (I assume you have a DVD drive?)

One other thing that I like to do is to have two separate drives, one for the OS and programs, and one for the data. That way if something happens to Windows I can just wipe and reinstall and don't have to worry about getting all the data off first... Again, not necessary just something to think about... :)

Thanks for the suggestion on the PSU. It was the one area I was really unsure about. This will be my first time building a PC from the ground up. I've only upgraded PC's in the past. I already have a 1TB external drive for all my data. I also have a DVD drive available as well.

That's the one thing I tend to look at with PSU's is to make sure it has a single 12V rail so that I don't accidentally fry something when plugging everything in or upgrading the computer down the road... I also tend to stick with Antec and Corsair myself as I know those brands are good; but, I know there are other good brands out there and so others may have some other brand suggestions to look at.
