There are quite a few ebay auction where people have proven that they have oveclocked there i7 2.66ghz to 3.8ghz. Thats crazy.... If i got an i7 920 with proper cooling and a good mobo could i over clock it to those speeds?

Sure you could...good processor and good motherboard...why not?

I used to be into overclocking but it's soo time consuming. A low over clock (500MHz or .5GHz) is pretty easy with just a small bump of the numbers in the BIOS settings. When people start getting into high overclocks it can take weeks to get a machine stable.

Be prepared for a long process. Adjusting processor voltage, RAM timings, RAM voltage, RAM speed, FSB (QPI for i7) writing down settings, testing, computer crashes, CMOS clearing, temp monitoring...ect.

Right when you think you found the perfect combination of BIOS settings and everything is running smooth...computer hard locks with a prime95 burn. Then clear CMOS and enter BIOS and start all over again:D

I've heard of people hitting 4GHz and higher on i7's :P Gigabyte has a guide out showing their setup and all the settings required to hit 4GHz.

Could I just ask you a question a little bit off topic?

How did you get 2300mbs of GPU memory in an acer laptop?

i have had mine up to 3.8ghz with a little voltage bump, i now have it at 3.6ghz 24/7

awsome chip, and mine is the earlyer co stepping revision

my d0 should hit 3.8 ghz on stock voltage, it's a very doable clockspeed, with good cooling and a good chip, along with a good mobo

Well that would be intersting to have a computer running that fast on a processor worth 300 bucks. How well does the phenom II 965 overclock?

(And about my video card memory. it runs up to 2303mb. Thats just what the sticker says this isnt a custom laptop.)

it's probably a 128/256 mb card, and just using the system ram in the operating system, that's what turbo cache does(or something close it it at least)

i7's clock very well. I have mine running 24/7 at 4Ghz right now with only 1.28 vcore (bios). Ive made benching runs all the way up to 4.305Ghz on a meager 1.35Vcore. I'm working on getting up to 4.5Ghz for benching runs.

I'm sure theres plenty of pro overclockers who do 4.0Ghz on a regular basis. That high of a clock really shortens the life of a processor though.

Although there is risk involved in overclocking, if you know what you are doing it really doesn't shorten the span of the chip very much. Yea it might last 4 years instead of 5, but I dont plan on having this chip in 4 years lol. So its really a moot point.
