i7 950 turbo mode

If you aren't overclocking then yeah you should put on turbo mode. If you are, turn it off, because it can cause instability.

LOL, ok then.

The only thing turbo does is give you an extra multiplier, thats it.

OP- Are you running the stock cooler? If you are, you shouldn't really overclock as I7's run toasty on the stock cooler as it is.

As for turbo, yes enabling turbo will give you better performance all around.

Why the "LOL, ok then."? I feel like I should be offended.

How exactly does turbo mode give you instabiility when overclocking? It has nothing to do with stability itself, unless you've overclocked too far on a given voltage.

If anything, turbo gives you more stability because it keeps your base clock down. Higher base clock can cause instability, thats when you start having to add VTT and PLL voltage.

My understanding of Turbo mode (Which may not even be correct) is that when the CPU is under load, the multiplier increases to give an increased clock when needed. So I figured if left on while overclocking, the turbo mode would have the potential to increase the clock beyond what is stable. I assume this isn't the case then?

When overclocking, just put turbo mode to ''enabled'' instead of auto and it will run the higher multiplier all the time not just under load. Therefore, the only thing turbo does it give you an extra multiplier which will help overclocking stability.

Could have, but I already had the AM3 board. The 1055T was an upgrade, not a build choice. I built this computer about a year ago with a strict budget, I'm just glad I've got a decent set up now so I'm pretty happy with it. I do wish I had one of those shiny new k series though :P
