i7 980 black edition

Overpriced....not worth it imo.

You could build a whole gaming system for £800 let alone just on that processor.

If take it your planning a new build? go skt 1155.Sandy Bridge.

Yeah the high end 1336 i7s are not worth it in the slightest. The performance difference between them and their lower end brothers is not significant enough to warrant the price. The new i7 2600k beats pretty much everything once overclocked (And man oh man does it overclock. Hits high 4Ghz easy. 4.6-4.8 is the number I've seen floating around the most. That's on air.) and it costs a whole lot less. The i5 2500k isn't far behind either and that's another $100 less. In your shoes, I would definitely go sandy bridge.

Also, don't buy off ebay, even if the item is brand new, you don't get a warranty. That and stuff is awfully overpriced a lot of the time. Compare:

nearly £100 saved, as well as getting a warranty and using a better supplier and getting better support.

I would sooner spend a third of the price on a better CPU:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...-bridge-quad-core-34-ghz-8mb-cache-95w-retail

with a decent motherboard:

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigabyte-ga-p55-ud6-intel-p55-motherboard

and still you are saving around £300, with a CPU that performs as well as the 980x, and a mobo to go with it

well you guys have put me straight ive been thinking and my processor is pretty good i dont know why i was thinking on updating ive decided i should be getting a new hdmi monitor and updating my graphics card 2 and then my setup is pretty good. thanks anyway

The new I7 2600k socket 1155 cpu has been proven to be just as good with multithreaded apps for ~1/3 the price.

Q6600? meh, it's OK. Slow stock clocks, and they run hot.

Even just getting an I5 2500k will put you at I7 975 performance (actually better because the I5 clocks so much higher on air) and runs VERY cool. When I had mine, 4.6ghz at 1.36v was doing 65c loaded on a megahalems :)

If he takes that route he's also looking at a new mobo and new ram too. Then again if he went with his original idea of the 980 he'd have to do the same...Haha I hate upgrading cpus.
