So I built an i7:
Intel Core i7 920 processor
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU cooler - word on the street is this is the best option for air-cooling
PC&P 750 Watt quiet power supply
1TB Seagate 7200.11 HDD --- edit I just realized I have a 1TB WD black caviar in it
the usual DVD/CD burner
Gigabyte EX58-UD3R motherboard (this is the cheap one with only two PCI express 2.0X16 slots. I don't plan on going with 3 cards and this one OC's just fine) I couldn't justify paying an extra 100 bucks for the motherboard.
G.Skill 3X1GB DDR3 1600 RAM (it was 99 shipped, and I just couldn't justify paying 100 extra for RAM)
The 200 I saved by getting the cheaper motherboard and RAM went to getting a video card setup. I ordered a pair of Sapphire 3870's for 180 shipped to run in Crossfire with my new setup.
It should be a sort of budget build, given that the product costs are as follows:
case: had laying around, could buy similar for 70-100
hard drive: given to me by a friend, could buy similar for about 100
motherboard: 200
RAM: 100
processor: 229+tax@Fry's, friend picked up for me so I didn't have to drive
video cards: 180
CPU cooler: i think it was like 80ish can't remember
DVD burner: had laying around, but they cost around 20ish
Power Supply: 110
I intended on getting a 300 dollar mobo and 200 dollar RAM, but decided that I should stick to doing a budget build to keep in the true spirit of my other computer builds. I kept every component (except the processor) at or under the $200 mark.
I'm happy I went with ATI. I couldn't find a better deal for 180ish for a video card solution than a pair of 3870's. I'm sure I'll find 20 better deals next week, but that's just the way it works.
