IBM T30 boot problems

Ok so today i got an old used IBM T30 thinkpad. I was aware it had boot problems and am now trying to solve them. When booting from the original hard drive it will boot about half the time so i replaced the hard drive with one from my old computer. After doing this it simply started up and brought me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. On seeing this i too a version of Linux Ubuntu on a disk and attempted to boot from that. Same problem. I'm certain its a hardware problem but id like to narrow it down. Thanks in advance.

You need to install a drive that is blank and try installing windows or linux that way. If the drive from your old computer has windows installed on it then thats the problem. The drive needs to be empty and install that way. You also need to make sure you are booting to the cd drive first and not the hdd. You set this up in the bios.

I set the boot drive to cd drive but I still got the same problem. Also, I had assumed having the old drive with windows on it was part of the problem but thank you for confirming.
