iBook?

I wanted to buy an apple ibook because I thought it would be a cool thing to have, and at the price its at now (about $125-195) there's no reason for me not to get one. I wanted to know, whats the highest OS-X it can go up to? Is it 10.5 or can I upgrade as far as Lion when it comes out?

Thanks,

oh okay, that's fine with me though, most of snow leopards updates were under-the-hood anyways. What was the line of laptops between ibook and macbook or was it straight from one to the other?

there was powerbook in there somewhere. I think that that it was powerbook -> ibook -> macbook, but I am not sure though.

Edit: the powerbook was the business class model replaced by the macbook pro in 2006. The ibook was the consumer class model that was replaced by the macbook in 2006.
Love the internet.

the last OSx version that supported PPC processors was 10.5.8. Short story, yes its the same limitation.
Its not that they arent good laptops, its that they are a unsupported architecture. Its like trying to run windows 7 on a Pentium 2. it just wont run it.

Yeah, I'm going to get an ibook, I've wanted an apple computer but you know $1000 is a liiiiiiiittle bit out of my price range, and ibooks are dirt cheap now even though it's basically the same experience as a macbook.

Ive wanted one too. I love the looks of the Apple OS. But yea, 1000+ is kinda high for mid range equipment with good build quality. Get the same thing from Asus with around 600, so your paying 400+ dollars for the OS.

The OS can only go up t 10.5, but can use newer apple programs that were released after the new OS 10.6 came out?

Im not real sure, but i think that it would work. Just be sure that your app doesnt call for "intel mac" and you will be fine.

I've refurbed a few iBooks before, any while they still hold on to their resale value I could never personally recommend one. They're ancient and slow and you're not going to be able to run most newer software. Too me it seems silly to spend $200 on a 6+ year old computer.

well, some of the core duo macbooks (2006 model) sell on craigslist locally for 800+ dollars. They are 6 years old. Its just a matter of what you consider expensive.

I'm sorry, but that's incredibly retarded.

I bought my 2007 core duo model for $20. Anyone who pays $800 for a 5 year old computer is either insane, or incredibly dense. Especially since you can buy brand new for just $200 more!

I guess the old saying a fool and his money are soon parted...

As for the ibook, what exactly is the clock speed and ram? OSX 10.5 requires at least 800mhz, and I wouldn't run it on less than 512mb ram. Also keep in mind applications are starting to cut off OSX 10.4 for compatibility, like the new version of iTunes needs at least 10.5

1.33 ghz and 768mb ram.

Ahh ok that should run it decently. Sounds like you realize what you're getting into. Most software today supports PPC still but since they are no longer in production there it a point when it will be unsupported. Once software stops being written for 10.5 that will be the end of new software for PPC.

Luckily all the mainstream software is available for it, it won't be like my G3 limited to 10.3. I can't install really much of any todays software on that one >_<

This I book is just to tide my mac addiction over until I can get a job in one or two years.
The one I am looking at is in decent condition and should be good for a while.

I have found 06 Macbooks on Ebay for $500, I would recommend that more if you feel a need to use OSX on a over priced computer.

I don't have $500, Thats why I'm getting an iBook, like I said I'm only going to use it for a year or a year and a half anyways.
