changing icons for file types

Right Click on Desktop > Properties > Desktop Tab> Customize Desktop Button at Bottom

That's how you can change icons for some of those system folders etc. that appear on your desktop.

If you also want to change the icons for file types, then you can either do it manually for each file type, or you can get a program that will help you manage that a lot easier. For example IconPackager found here costs 15 bucks. There maybe other ones that are free - you can google that and see. The advantage here is that you can create and save sets (i.e. packages) of icons and all you do is select a set and all the corresponding icons will be changed. You can also download sets that other people have done. I believe IconPackager also has an icon explorer that can extract icons from files (for example from the shell.dll file found in C:\windows\system32

Anyway, that is one option. The other option is to manually change the icons. For example, in your pictures folder, right click on a jpeg file. Choose Properties and then go to the Icon tab. There you can select a new icon and also decide whether you want to apply it just to that one file or to all jpeg files. Repeat this for other file types.

Hope that helped.

You should try IconTweeker, It's free and there's loads of different themes on it and you can download more if you want... :D

PC Hobbyist- There doesn't seem to be an icon tab?

Really? I wonder what I have installed that makes mine look like this:
I have windows xp sp2.

and @ Kornowski: hey cool, thanks for the tip on the vista icons program.

Here's a program that has vista icons. I use it and it's great! No problems at all!

This seems to be a pretty complete set. It just makes me nervous that they say "install it in safe-mode and disable any antivirus and antispyware programs before installing".

Is this really safe? How can I undo any changes and revert back to the original default if I want? Does it totally change my shell32.dll file or does it backup the original?

I want to try it, but I am hesitant. Does it really change THAT much more than what I can change in IconTweaker (which btw, I really like).

@Kornowski: Thanks for the link in the previous post. I just downloaded it from crystalxp.net

I don't know, I may do but it'd be better to use Icon Tweeker as it doens't use any memory...

Your welcome, Looks really good doesn't it?

Im now using those Vista Icons....but thats about it.

Im not gonna be putting all widgets & stuff on this time.

I've used all 3 versions, and no spyware virus' or adware included. I just run a virus check after I'm done and everything is good. They work great. I'd recommend it.

Quick question to you Halian. Can you (if you wanted to) uninstall it and revert back to the unpatched shell with default xp icons - or are there files that get patched and remain patched forever?

Nothing gets patched forever, you can uninstall the whole thing.
