ID Controller

After many seemingly random hard drive problems I decided to reformat one of them (I have several spare HDD) and reinstall the OS (Windows 2000).

Long story short, after trying it on three different HDD my computer tech says it looks like the ID (Identification) Controller has gone bad; that it's on the motherboard, and non-repairable (ie get a new motherboard; or a new computer).

I don't have any problem getting a new motherboard (or computer), but I wanted to ask here first

"is there any way to fix/replace a broken ID controller"?

thanks.

No you cant replace a IDE controller port. Unless its a new board, most older boards had 2 IDE ports. Did he try on both IDEs. Plus have you tried a different IDE cable?

What is happening when your installing?

Here's what used to happen at boot up:
On first screen where primary drive is "named" (for lack of a better term), when the machine boots up correctly the drive name is legible, ie it makes sense. When machine isn't going to successfully boot up, drive name is illegible (garbage letters, numbers, symbols).

So, now, when trying to reinstall OS: when it gets to the part about trying to write files to the HDD, I get the following message

6047 MB Disk0 at ID0 on bus0 on atapi
C: Unformatted or damaged 38137 MB

I know for a fact that the hdd is functioning because I just had it in an external hdd enclosure and accessed it on another computer.

The same error message appeared on all three hdd; the only number changing was the 38137 MB, as all three drives were different sizes.

If this is a older board, try replacing the cmos battery on the board, just a few bucks. Just match the battery number.

two out of the three hard drives I tried to reinstall windows on had just been formatted (NTFS) via an external enclosure.
