IDE primary w/ OS, trying to get SATA w/ OS as secondary storage device

Hi,

The primary HDD on here is an IDE, which comes with the computer, and is not removable as the computer is configured to boot only that HDD (for some reason).

I'm trying to get this computer to read a SATA HDD (160GB). I want it to be a secondary storage device. It's from another computer I have whose motherboard fried, and there is data on it that I need to access for my business. It has Windows XP installed as the OS.

So I hooked it up to the secondary HDD cable, which is of course attached to the main IDE HDD (no other option I think). I booted Windows XP as usual from the main HDD, but the SATA drive isn't showing up in "My Computer," nor is it registering in the Device Manager. The "Secondary Storage Device" slot in the BIOS doesn't show the SATA either.

I went to the BIOS to disable SCSI as recommended by another user on another forum, but there isn't an option for that in my BIOS.

All I need is to get the data off of that SATA HDD and onto the HDD already in the computer.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks,
James

First of all a sata drive doesn't connect to an ide drive. The board itself has to have sata controllers or you add in a separate sata controller card. The sata cable is usually shorter and far thinner then the standard ide ribbon cable. The a370n shown in your sig isn't found at the HP support site. http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Look...ang=en&h_cc=us&h_query=pavilion+a370n&x=6&y=4

The image shown here is what the typical sata cable and end connector look like while some are now seen in neon and multicolors.

What I thought was an IDE HDD is 200GB so it is probably a SATA, plus that is what the connectors look like---the reason I thought it was IDE is because I saw that Device Manager has "IDE" as part of a continous string for the HDD description:

"IDE\DISKST3200822AS" etc for the Device Instance ID in the Details tab of the Disk Drive properties in the Device Manager...

The a30n supports four sata drives in two arrays or as individual masters like sata master #1, sata master #2, etc. as seen at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...31&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3339287&lang=en

Even with some type of adapter to plug it in on the middle connector on the primary ide cable it still won't work. A sata is a different type of drive using a totally different bus on the board with it's own controller. You would still go by the board diagram seen at the other link to see where the drive should plug into. That's a one way fit for those cables as well. The power connector will be a wider flat type coming from the supplu itself.

Once you have the drive plugged in correctly by looking to see which plug is #1 on the sata primary you will still to download the drivers for Windows from the HP support site. When those are installed and active you should be able to go right into the Disk Management tool found at "Control Panel>Agministrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage" and double click there to open that up. To give give you a quick example look over the screen capture here. Look in the right windows to see how the drives are shown.

It has native SATA support in the ICH6, drivers are not needed.

From the way you described the way you hooked up the drive, it sounds like you don't have an SATA cable for the second drive, only the power is connected.

The description of "So I hooked it up to the secondary HDD cable, which is of course attached to the main IDE HDD" can make anyone wonder if that was a jerry rigging to the ide cable or the second 12v plug on the main rail. Either or you won't get far without a sata type data cable.

If you have the latest updates for the board itself those would include the drivers for the onboard controllers. Those are also installed from the board's software disk when first going to install Windows. When you get the correct the cable look at the bottom right side of the diagram seen at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3339287&lang=en#N858

Right directly under the lithium battery holder you will see the four sockets for the sata drives with the two ide sockets to the right. The bottom left of the four sockets is for the sata master #1. If the partition itself has inaccessible once this is done you can copy files from the drive with a live for cd Linux distro like Knoppix or ubuntu. But that would be a last option.
