I seen at a local computer shop that they had a plug that can convert andy ide drives to sata.

I have a bunch of old hard drives that are ide and wanna see whats on them will the converter plug work well?

you said ide to sata. think not.

On the other hand . you said ide you want to read.
just get another ribbon cable with more connections.
Radio shack, office depot. your good to go. make your hd your 1st connection.

Why not? I know it's not ideal but I've seen lots of people use these converters.

You are right though, he could just use the 1 PATA connection that all motherboards should still have connect 2 drives at a time to see what's on them.

I unfortunately, don't have the one PATA on my board. What about the IDE to USB?

If you don't mind being limited to about 33MB/s, go for it. Honestly, if you're going to use internal drives and you're out of IDE plugs, just get an IDE controller. They are much more reliable than either USB or SATA to IDE converters and the performance is probably better too. I doubt you'd spend any more either. Certainly not if you wanted to use more than one drive.

The converters are fine if you're just pulling files off old HDs or if you have an old HD you occasionally use as backup storage/storing small stuff something like that, but the performance is usually nothing short of disappointing if you plan on using it for your OS, applications or use it as your main storage.

For "just seeing what's on them" just about any converter (IDE-SATA, IDE-USB... that's probably it) will do just fine.
