ide to sata

I was just wondering if anyone wouold know about this. I seen a cable that would change your hard drive from an ide to a sata. Do you gain the transfer rate and do you have to reformate your harddrive before using it/plugging it in?

First of all Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html Please remember to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

There are a number of addon controller cards for just this now being seen and growing very popular with MAC users running older systems with ide drives. One brand of ide to sata addon controller card is seen at http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/ide-sata/

There is a substantial gain seen when converting to a faster interface like the sata bus. The actual gain to equal a sata drive being installed on the system will depend on the make and model of this type of adapter card. The current data on the drive should be readily accessible at the faster speed. But like anything else computer related once you switch positions of a drive with Windows on it there will be at least a need to repair the operating system being run at the time.

What do you mean repair the operating system. Is it because it is looking for that drive letter or when you change it in BIOS, won't that take care of it?

When you install any operating system a boot loader is created that specifies where to look for that operating system's initiation files in order to see it load up. With the newer versions of Windows a hardware profile is created when installed along with the boot loader. That and the boot sector on the drive contain information on what type of drive and how it is connected to the main board to some degree.

An ide drive is still and ide drive where Windows will expect to read and write through the ide not sata bus. For a drive used for storage only the transfer to an adpater like the one shown will simply speed things up for data access there.
