IDE vs. SATA II

hey CF, i have IDE and SATA II hard drives hooked up. will running an OS off of the IDE hard drive make the OS run slower than it would if it were on the SATA II hard drive?

It all depends on when it was manufactured.

A new IDE HDD, is par with a new SATA HDD (7,200RPM)

But, say you had an old IDE hard drive, it would be slower than the SATA hard drive, and vice versa.

its a seagate ST3250620A, 7200RPM. windows 7 gives it a rating of 3.0. vista gives my seagate SATA II hard drive a rating of 5.9.

edit: could that be 8mb vs, 16mb of cache?

Diagram: (> = Better performance)

32MB of cache > 16MB of cache > 8MB of cache > 4MB of cache

So yes, 16 mb of cache would be better than 8mb of cache.

So say you had a brand new, 7200 RPM 16mb cache IDE hard drive you bought.

Then you bought a brand new SATA II 7200 RPM 16mb cache Hard drive.

They would perform par. (the same)

But say you bought a brand new 16mb IDE hard drive.

But then bought a brand new 8mb cache SATA II hard drive.

The IDE Hard drive would beat the SATA II because of the more cache.

Just backing this up, he's right. Past 16mb/s there's an extremely small difference in performance. Unless you're constantly writing HUGE files, you won't see a difference.

I just ordered a Fujitsu (forgot the model) 320GB, 7200rpm 16MB cache HDD for my laptop to replace a WD 250GB, 5400rpm 8MB cache HDD.. hopefully I see an increase in speed.

lol. not a problem. but ya, 5400 to 7200 should make a nice difference.

Huge files would mean like anything over like 1GB
