Hi, I have been trying to set up a home network--total failure.

My desktop pc (vista home premium) is connected via an ethernet cable to a bt home hub2. My printer is connected via a usb cable.

My laptop (xp home) is connected to the hub by wireless.

I am trying to connect my laptop wirelessly to my desktop so that I can share the printer etc.

Is there a step by step idiot guide that i can follow to get these connected.

Help greatly appreciated.

Regards, John

All computers have to have the same workgroup name.
All computers need own name. Maybe laptop, Mine or downstairs.
then goto the control panel and share the printer.
Ya can do it all from the control panel on each computer.
You can share printer on the computer that has it.
You can find the printer that wants to use it.

Hi, I could see shared files but not access the printer. Could it be that I have the same printer software loaded on my laptop.

The other thing was, I set up my pc for passworded access, but couldn't see that on my laptop.

You have to share the printer the printer its installed to.
The software on the other that will be using it will be able to use all the options available.
Your learning curve. try harder and figure it out. your adventure. Like mine constant.........again.

One thought. never had Vista. goto start, help support and type share printer.
Should be the same. then goto the printer that wants to use it. goto control panel
and should see the printer. choose use as default printer for the network printer.
done.

You also have to leave the computer that printer is connected on all the time in order for others to access, Do you printer have wireless capacity? or can it connect to the router(hub) directly via ethernet cable?
cheers

Made it!!

Thanks for all the help, had time to sit and get it up and running today--left home early from work due to heavy snow.

It is like most things, easy once you have done it.

Once again, thanks.
