IE6 and Windows 98 issues

First off, do not say reinstall or upgrade windows. That is out of the question... Using another browser would probably be as well. My dad's older laptop has been acting up, but he's too stubborn to reload windows on it. The machine runs alright, but many websites cause throw illegal operations. Some problem with MSVCRT.DLL if I recall correctly.

I noticed it seemed to do it when pages had flash or shockwave embeded, so I reloaded both. I was able to get pages to load such as Shockwave.com, but the problem still occurs elsewhere. I've pretty much concluded it's javascript related as some pages that act up simply have roll-over buttons and such.

Firefox runs just fine on it and I might suggest this to him, but I'm sure he'd rather stick with IE if at all possible. Any ideas? I actually found that DLL file on the desktop, so either myself or he probably replaced it in the past.

For replacing the msvcrt.dll driver you may want to give the instructions seen at http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=msvcrt.dll a try. There are two methods seen there for the 9x-ME, XP line of Windows. Dll-files.com also has a free online scanner for msvcrt.dll errors found at http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcrt

The links there and one more that lists the various errors seen involving the same dynamic link library file seen at http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ermsvcrt.htm are the tools found for repairing the older version of Windows. The Opera browser is another alternative to FireFox to consider if you can't get IE 6 corrected. I kind of doubt you could get IE 7 running on 98.

I considered replacing that DLL file, but I was hoping there was an alternative. I didn't to deal with a possibly dead laptop I'd have to revive through command or something

At this point there's too much you can really do for 98 being that it's on the updated list and no longer supported by MS. Those links there had to be searched for just to look up information on that one driver. ouch! The possible upgrade to 2000 might be another thought to consider over the old Fat32 arena? ME would leave you wondering again. I had to throw that in.
