IE8 slow problem

ie8 at times runs slow. web pages are slow to load and react. pages often freeze. when this happens the cpu is maxed out with iexporer.exe at the top of the list. i'm running XP SP3 with mcafee antivirus. i've tried a laptop also with XP and IE8 on my router and that was fine so the internet connecion is OK. i've run all the usual virus scans and malware scans. the strange thing is some days its fine and other days its terrible. i suspect its either a windows update or mcafee update that's torpedoed IE8. i've surfed the net and found people with the same problem but no one definative answer. some suggest uninstalling and reinstalling. i've also another issue that might be related and its that its a long time after booting before the computer is usable. again the cpu is maxed out with services.exe as the cause. after about 10 mins it settles down. i would be grateful for any suggestions.

Run a malware scan with Malwarebytes. Actually do the following.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Vista and Windows 7 users must right click on the hijackthis icon and click on run as. If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on the icon to get it to appear.


Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log


We may have to run another program but lets get these scans done.

i already had malwarebytes & hijack this on my PC from a previous episode with a dns trojan.

I would definitely uninstall most of your toolbars. This is what causes most of the browsing issues. Lets do the following.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.

Remove the Adware:

•Please close all open programs and internet browsers.
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Delete.
•Confirm each time with OK
•Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
•Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.
•You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

In my experience, Internet Explorer 8 has always been slow and laggy, especially as we have to use it at school, thats why I migrated to chrome ages ago, the newer IE isn't as bad I dont think.

True, but the new IE is still terrible. Its IE after all.

by uninstall the toolbars do you mean turn them off? Am i flogging a dead horse with IE8, should i be going for chrome or firefox (as recommended by a colleague). IE8 has done what i've wanted no problems until now. BTW its running great tonight. the log as requested:-

Another thing you can try doing is resetting IE back to defaults. Open internet options, click on the advanced tab and click on both reset buttons at the bottom. This will remove all addons and set it back to defaults. See if this improves your browsing.
 
thank you very much for your help. didn't reset the browser as there's a vast improvement anyway. also couldn't find ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint to uninstall. which of the preceding processes fixed the problem?
my next problem is the long boot up, is there a guide to removing unneccessary services. or is it the large number of windows updates i've accumulated?
 
How much system memory do you have installed? It was probably a combination of what I had you remove. How long does it take after you see the windows XP splash screen that you are at your desktop and can click on icon? How long does it take for the hdd activitiy to quit?

Lets scan for an mbr infection which can slow down boot time.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

To remove the infections simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean them or remove them.

After trying to clean them it will pop up with the results of the scan and its actions.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

I would also suggest to download and run Ccleaner.

Click on where it says download latest version top right. Uncheck any additional software to be installed during the install. When Ccleaner has been installed, just open the program and click on run cleaner bottom right. The process may take quite some time if never ran before.

memory is 1gig. takes approx 1.25mins to get to desktop. then i can fire up say adobe reader no problem. but if i try outlook express or IE it takes 5 mins after clicking icon before anything appears. after 2 nights of lightning fast browsing i've slid down a snake tonight, its been terrible. i tried to download tdsskiller and anything hung, rebooted and lightning quick again.
 
ran tdsskiller it found and removed 2 high risk items, i can't find a log though. is it normal for tdsskiller to load on each boot?. will get back to you tommorrow, i'm in the UK and its getting late so i'm shutting down for tonight.

ps this boot IE loaded straight up and is lightning quick, but mcafee is grumbling(switched off)

Please post the logfile. You should rerun it to make sure it gets everything. Once it scans and nothing is found it shouldn't run at next boot.
