If an Optane accelerator drive dies, can it cause startup failure?

I’ve got an MSI prebuild come to me with a startup repair message which I cannot get past. The accelerator drive appears to be completely dead and will not read on any machine. The 2TB HDD also inside reads fine and appears to bear all files I wish to backup before a reinstall. Would the failure of the optane drive cause this issue? or it's just a coincidence that it's dead and the machine won't boot?

Thanks

You are correct, the intel optane system uses a small SSD of 16GB or so as fast cache and must be working in order for the system to boot.
