If I change my motherboard and CPU...?

Depending on what you're switching from and to, you may end up needing to reinstall / reactivate Windows. Your best bet is to uninstall all the applications and drivers relating to your motherboard before you swap them out.

well, switching to a quad core... and a P45 mobo, or I might get the Core i7 920 with gigabyte X58 (if my dad spots the mobo)

Also, is the Q8200 anygood? does it compare to the Q6600?

Also note that if you get an X58 motherboard you will also need to buy DDR3 RAM.
I know that.

But RAM is plug and play.

So all I need is the Mobo and CPU

I know the CPU is plug and play, but the mobo has drivers etc, so ill need to install those possibly....

The issue really comes when you are changing 3 devices at once, I believe that is the limit at where Microsoft will ask you to reactivate Windows, so be prepared for that. Also note that there is a possibility that you will need to reinstall Windows after switching motherboards.

Just changing the motherboard ends up looking like a lot more than 3 devices. But for Windows to boot, you almost always need to clear the old drivers out or run a repair.

True, which is why it's good to keep in mind that you most likely will have to reactivate Windows afterwards.

And just to add on, as I said earlier the best thing to do prior to installing your new devices is to remove all the drivers and applications related to them.
