If I got a huge external HDD, would I need to partition it?

I was thinking about getting a huge external HDD, but my friend's saying that I would have to partition it.

This is the HDD and External Housing I was thinking of getting:
500 GB HDD
External Casing

If I would have to partition it, it's not really a problem, but what would be the biggest HDD I could get w/o having to partition it?

You have to create a partition when you format that is a required thing. You could create one partition for one thing and another for something else. That is the beauty of partitioning. You can create one large partition and no problem doing that. Two partitions is almost like 2 drives.

Windows XP Pro, Genuine if it matters. And what I'm wanting to do is partition it into 1 huge drive, so that when I plug it in I'll get G:/ instead of G:/ H:/ I:/ J:/ etc.

when it formats, it partitions...every harddrive needs to be partitioned/formatted, doesn't matter what size....in terms of multiple partitions, no, one big partition is fine.

Okay, that's what I was thinking, but he insisted that I'd need to have it split into 160 GB partitions or something.
