Well nothing is truly "futureproof", though yes, while not giving a huge advantage now, the 6 cores of the CPU will most likely come in handy in the future when more applications address 6 threads.

EDIT: Oh, I see you edited your post. i7-9** series and the upcoming Sandy Bridge i7s all have Hyperthreading, so they have 8 threads :o
But only 4 physical cores.
An i7 will last you a long time too, maybe even longer than Phenom II X6, but the overall platform cost would be much higher and there's no way you could fit it into a £550 build

If the application can benefit from more than two cores, then your dual will run slower than a processor with more than 2 cores

However, if you compare very fast quad core to a slow six core, Then things might be different. A fast quad core could beat a slow Six core processor even in applications that can use more than 4 cores. Same thing if you compare a very fast dual core to slow tri-core or very slow quad core.

Some intel processors like i3 and i7 support hyper-threading which improve performance in multi-threaded applications. So, you can't make straight forward comparison based on number of cores between two radically different architectures.

Huh. Cheapest LGA1155 i7 is price of i7-950, which is over £200 here. Still, some of those processors do look like excellent value for money, and it's nice to see that the ones with unlocked multipliers don't cost too much more than the ones without
 
ok so core for core the i9** beats any x4 or x6 but surely the i7 (excluding the 970 and 980) they have only 4 physical cores vs the x6 six physical cores so surely thats got to count for something in future proofing or for multiple threaded applications i mean and i heard HT is rubbish for games but really good for runing multiple applications
