so if i buy the x6 it will last a long time as its future proof, instead of the quad i7's
Well nothing is truly "futureproof", though yes, while not giving a huge advantage now, the 6 cores of the CPU will most likely come in handy in the future when more applications address 6 threads.
EDIT: Oh, I see you edited your post. i7-9** series and the upcoming Sandy Bridge i7s all have Hyperthreading, so they have 8 threads
But only 4 physical cores.
An i7 will last you a long time too, maybe even longer than Phenom II X6, but the overall platform cost would be much higher and there's no way you could fit it into a £550 build
